You can't, like, own software, man.

Nifty idea, maybe somewhat akin to the GMail Swap function, except more illegal.
No email address or anything though, none that I saw.

Even though this page has a big, impressive title, it is about a simple idea which I hope I can convey in a few words.

The big, impressive title is "The Careware Idea"?

well the print for 'Careware' is pretty big ....

okay so the site is kind of all over the place, but the dude's main labour of (free)love is here:

http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html

i find arachnophilia pretty decent as a page-help-to-build-er but i'm obviously not an authority on software. just wondering if the hippy is worth his 'big, impressive title' programming-wise...

... wow, I think the whole meaning of this dude's page as well as the thread just pulled a 180, cause I'm lost.

Well, I got through

quote:
In CareWare, * the "buyer" gets something of value in exchange for something the "seller" wants. And what does the seller want? The general answer is "Anything except money," but I prefer the really remarkable transactions, which you recognize instinctively when you see them.

Here is an example -- here is a hypothetical transaction between myself and you. I have a program called "Arachnophilia" which is a rather nice Web page editor and workshop, but I don't want your money in exchange, I want something else. So I say "This is what I am offering, and here is what I want in return." Simple, right?

and figured he was using Arachnophilia as an example, so... but no, I didn't bother reading through the entire website.
See, it makes sense now, looking further into it. Perhaps there's more to this 'reading' shit than meets the eye.

edit: Just dawned on me that the previously stated 'You can't own software, man' thing was likely spawned from an earlier thread on this forum. One of those things that popped into the ol noggin and I couldn't remember where it came from, so if it's yours, my bad.
