Topic awaiting preservation: Lost all file associations!

My friend lost all his file associations so he can't open a file or program without it asking what to open it with. Is there a easy way to get them back to their defaults?

For the default file associations:

google->restore+file+associations

Other than that, for specific programs you'll probably have to just reinstall those programs.

How exactly did he manage to lost all his file associations? There might be a simpler fix if we had more information.

He got it fixed. I suggested trying system restore and he figured it out from there. Everything works ok for him now.
