a few years ago i stumbled across this great asylum of ozone surfing World Best Websites - which itself, imho, needs a serious makeover.

anyway, so i think we're all quite familiar with what makes an embarrassing website. what's your pick for the best that you've seen so far? and in your expert opinion, what makes it the best?

(yes i know, we've probably had this topic in a thread before but as far as i'm concered it doesn't count because i didn't see it ... and i'm in need of some serious inspiration here =) ...

well the best website is hard to define. for me, a website should be visually attractive (where usually flash is used), but it also has to be accessible, fast loading and browser compatible. a perfect mix is the new rammstein website. a band-website, which requires a very clever and highly attractive design, but especially this one, has been coded with CSS and is also perfectly accessible to small monitors and pdas. (resize your window, to see what i mean)

One of the sites that just amazes me every time I go there is the one for the Birthday Massacre site. It may be a little slow in loading on Dialup but looks awesome when done.

Design wise I like styleboost.

mas: thank you for pointing the rammstein website. It's really well done, and to be honest I didn't expected that kind of clean design, use of standards, and all from this band ( it shows that I barely know them ).

skaarj a bunch of the links in that place went no where but mad visuals, though.

and that B-day Massacre site is a twisted, morbid delight.

not quite sure what styleboost is about, but very nice. that gigantic header image didn't take a million years to load, either ....

me enjoying this ...

This is one of my favourite personal sites, this fits the criteria you listed I think Ruski. It belongs to an inmate rarely seen of late Weadah.
I like the websites listed so far, I've also noticed the use of sound in a lot af sites that get a mention. It seems that I have lost my list of favourite personal websites as well as my list of favourite commercial sites. If I find them I'll post up another couple.

NoahGrey.com

But he's way more talented than I.

I have used Gallery with good results on several client sites. It's a lot easier to modify than you might think. I spend 10-15 hours to integrate the package into client sites and make it validate to XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2.1

i remember Noah Grey from when the it had a black background. it is a stunning gallery, but the quality of the photographs has a lot to do with that..

brucew i'm working on customising my very first gallery from menalto. it took me a week to figure out how to configure it properly, so wish me luck with getting it to match the look of the rest of my site

p.s. weadah's site is... i'm jealous... damn ...

Yeah, tokyoplastic website.

These are a couple of my favorites; oldies but still goodies: da bomb and my all time favorite: charge me up(patience needed on dial up) .

I've just found this site today and I lurve it. It's a Flash site and takes a little while to load but well worth it IMO. The guy is promoting his music which I'm actually starting to like myself. I've just started teaching myself Flash and would love to make one like this....
