I searched the net for months looking for how to make fire in photoshop, and wasn't satisfied with any of the ones I found (which amount ot about 15). So I made my own.

I'd enjoy any feedback or tips the esteemed mad scientists have about it. It takes a while to do, but I think the results are worth it.

I like it very much. It's a good looking effect. Well done Dracos.

My only quibble would be that the DispMap part added a rippling effect that's slightly to small to the fire. Try using a larger 'wave' in the Dmap instead. I can't recall seeing fire that 'vibrated'. But you DO see flames that 'wave'.

Good stuff!

PS: i don't think it takes long to do at all... but then again... i usually write a book for a tute. hahaa

I admit the displacement in the tutorial is a little weak. This one came out much better:

That's a nice effect.

Hey try this Dracos... take that dragon and put him into a new doc of his own. gBlur him 8-10px, then use the Minimum filter to add 5 pixels to the size (set it to 5). Then save out the psd file, flattened. Use either the Displace or Glass filter to displace the fire that's close the shape's edges. Apply the filter though to a dupe of the Fire layer, and set the layer to Screen.

I'm wondering if that would create any kind of effect.

I'll see what I can do with that. The dragon is actually a 0% fill custom shape with a 1px stroke, and a copy of the shape is used as a mask for the fire. The eye I painted in by hand... don't remember where it goes in the layers right now.

I think there is too little red and white in there to look like fire... (at least white)

There isn't much white in that image, true. The colors can be adjusted in various stages of making the fire. If I had used 4 flame layers instead of 3, the colors would be much more yellow/white, and represent a hotter fire.

Fire seldom ranges from white to red anyway. Most of the time it ranges yellow-orange-red or white-yellow-orange.
