I ask for several reasons... one being where do you like to go to get tabs/music? another being have you heard of http://www.powertabs.net they have an awesome program and site setup that allows you to find and download tabs/music and view it as it plays the notes in midi format. very cool, and also free!

hmmffftttt, they mucked up the page, but you can get to that Chord Generator by clicking the Chord Generator at the nav bar.

whoa, I come in to see what was said, didn't even plan on posting a reply yet, and a string on my guitar popped... that's the 2nd time today and both times I was nowhere near the guitar, but on the computer thinking about it... trippy

http://www.actiontab.com has a really nice little program for tuning your guitar, it has something like 4 common tunings and of course standard EADGBE. you click the button labeled "Low E" and it plays a propper low E, same with the rest of the strings. I usually only use that one reference note and do the rest using relative tuning.

eyezaer: I've seen that (or a very similar) chord generator before, but had lost the link. Thanks

templar: I only wish I knew how to play piano, but the most I can do is Mary had a Little Lamb, and even then it might take me a second to remember where to start

I've played acoustic and electric guitar for around nine years. The first two years were my learning years and then I chose to forget all the songs I learned and work on creating my own. I've been strictly a player of only original music since then. I started with pop punk (a la Blink 182), went nowhere with nu-metal, shifted to Christian (!) praise rock, gradually progressed to mainstream alternative rock, found hard rock to my liking, then onward to blues in 2003, and now I have no clue what I'm doing. I just play guitar and whatever style of music that I feel like at the time. The other day I was going to post an ad as a guitarist looking for a band to start or join but I had no idea what style I wanted form the band around. That was annoying.

I don't have studio-quality recording equipment like DmS but for my purposes... plugging directly into my soundcard or micing my acoustic guitar suffices.

Here are some short recordings of mine. http://www.metavirus.net/music/ (2:55 minutes/seconds total)

Demos - 01 - Guitonica : Would be a great electronica song if I could finish it. Reminds me of Shadowrun club music.
Demos - 02 - Violinator : Some say the violin doesn't sound realistic but I've heard violinators play like that.
: These were engineered in Reason. Main themes are based on my guitar riffs imported from TablEdit.

Riffs - 01 - Riff A : Feels mighty good to hear dem notes ring.
Riffs - 02 - Riff B : Nice and slow. Tempo increases gradually and accidentally due to SoundForge effects.
Riffs - 03 - Riff C : Sounds Satrianish. I like it. I haven't used it in a song yet.
Riffs - 07 - Riff G : Starts out blues and goes somewhere unknown.
Riffs - 08 - Riff H : Excerpt from my masterpiece. Oh this song is great in its entirety. I can waste much time playing this on guitar without tiring. This is the piece by which I judge my talent. (2004)

Samples - 01 - King of the Blues
: Poor recording. Bad fuzz. Complete song has singer, two clean guitars, and nifty bluesy lyrics.

whatever I've played classical guitar for about 18 years. I'd much rather play classical guitar than piano.

Tabs are good just like tutorials for Photoshop are good to a point. They will teach you what you are hearing more or less. It would be more beneficial to train your ear to hear what is being played and learn then from the sound, not the notes. That being said, I always read the music for classical guitar, but I used to have a really good ear.

I can learn a rock song by ear a lot easier than I can a classical guitar piece.

I play piano once in a while and guitar daily.

I've played electric guitar for about two years, mostly because that allows me to get into the higher frets and therefore better soloing but can play most songs basically equally good.
I also think I'm going to get into classicaly music a bit more. It's kinda interesting to play in forms that aren't really used much any more.

Ultimate Guitar and MX Tabs are good, Ultimate Guitar often having better tabs than the other one.

If a song doesn't sound right in 3 tabs, I'll go to my guitar teacher to find out what it really is. The guy's a mad man with his guitar.

Metahuman: just combine the things you like most about playing each style of music; certain riffs, cords that match with eachother throughout each style. See what you can combine and can't. Create a new style unique to the band.

The pop punk band, Blink 182, uses many classic classical music melodies as the main riffs for their songs. Talk about unoriginality.

Now that I didn't know. I was wondering how they could make that and have the rest of the song just power chords.

I'll second that, because I'm coming along quite nicely just learning from a friend's dad. I'm getting the basics down, and have an ever-growing selection of songs I'm learning to play, most of which I'm teaching myself. I also have a couple that I'm working on writing, fairly simple stuff... one lately is Am Em Am Em G D C E but when I say Am, I'm actually talking about a chord I dunno the name of it's like an Am but you pick your index finger up... anybody know this one? tried to look at the chord generator page up there but it wasn't loading...

Am = A minor.

I think E minor is

Techincally it's an A4, an A5 depends on if you play the B string. A4 is kind of a wierd chord (the 4's are all kind of more technical than "real" chords) but the 5's are supposed to be only the root (A) and a fifth (In the case of A that would be E). These are your basic rock power chords because they are relatively simple and play well through various boxes. Adding the B string can add wierd harmonics through different boxes. (Also if you do the easy fingering of power chords with just your index and middle fingers you tend to kind of naturally mute the B string)

However that chord does tend to sound pretty good on an acoustic in the open position. You can also use the index finger as a hammer-on or pull-off coming into and out of chord changes to that to get some nice layering to the sound.

tnt: you were right with the Em

I'm learning new chords all the time, like I know 4 Ds but have no clue as to the name of 3 of them...

"power chords" I can play, barre chords I can't... I always mute the bottom strings. I have chubby hands and clumsy fingers to begin with, but the more I practice the better I get, and now I'm getting to where I can play barre chords right, but only on rare occasions. I have trouble making a B chord for the same reasons I have trouble with barre chords...

Actually that chord I X I would be called an Asus2. It is more of a chord used to go from one chord to the next. The 'B' is the 2nd of an A chord (whether major or minor). Just go up the alphabet A - B. Since B is the 2nd of the chord...hence the name Asus2. The 'sus' means "suspended" If you go from your E minor chord and then to that chord, the 'B' is "suspended" over from the E minor chord leading to either an A major or A minor chrod.

An A4 chord would be if you did:

E | 0
B | 3
G | 2
D | 2
A | 0
E | x

see the 3 on the B string? That not is D which is the 4 up from the alphabet. A - B - C - D

pictures of a similar guitar

one month left, hope I can hold out till I get it I'm only giving $60 for it, which is a STEAL in my opinion. I'm going to have to find an amp for under $40, though.

anyway, just wanted to share the news.

I've got 2 electrics.
One older neck-through ESP Horizon, similar to the HORIZON Custom over at http://www.espguitars.com/esp_custom.htm but in perl white with a sloping Jackson style head. It has two single coils and a Jeff Beck humbucker and I've modded it with a fully floating floyd rose tremolo.

Then I've built one myself from a bought bolt on neck and a body thats cut to closely resemble a rounded off version of the EX-400 LTD at http://www.espguitars.com/ltd_ex.htm
That one has no tremolo and an active humbucker. A brutally fat rythm sound

I'm running this through a rack with an older stereo Mesa Boogie Studio tube preamp, a separate compressor, stereo eq and a digital effect processor (DSP 128 +) topped off with a 2x150 watt solid state amp and 2 1x12" speakers. I used to have 2 4x12" marshall cabs but that was sort of overkill as I stopped playing in a band... But man, did that setup move a lot of air
