Ok... for three years ago I did this.
But now I have forgot how to do it. Only thing I remember is that I used the measure tool alot.
Any inmates that have experience with tribal art?
This is how long I have come so far:

The problem I have now is to make even cutouts on
all circles.

1) Join a tribe

2) make art.

As for how to make the type of thing you posted - it appears that it's just a bunch of circles...with circles cut out of it...what more are you looking for?

you could ask mahjqa....he did a nice tribal sig a while ago. i think the easiest way is to make some cool shapes with the pen tool. then you mirror it horizontally and you got something tribal......:-|

Actually, DL is closer to the mark. You need to specifiy WHICH tribe, what aboriginal people, etc.

Celtic, American Indian, Aboriginal, etc. And then which tribe within that particular people.

What you need to start with is guidelines. Look 'em up in your helpfile. It may also be a good thing to know that you can start a circular selection from it's midpoint by holding ALT.

The rotational symmetry can easily be made by using edit>transform. (the general principle can be found here.

I gave it a shot:

Using only circular selections I made the layer on the left (in white). Then I made 4 additional layers with different rotations. (Keep adding 72° every time)

So it ain't all that hard. Though, I'd recommend getting to know the pen tool if you want to make more out of it.

DL & WS:

Mahjqa: Thank you! I think you have found an easier way to do it.
I've tried the pen tool and came up with this cheezy looking tribe.
looks like something batman would have.

Of course with a couple of **offset** twirls, a layer copy, and some flipping and mofing around, you can turn OlssonE's Klingon frisbee into ...

Sorry about the fuzzy edges, but the original was surrounded by transparency artefacts, and I preferred to use an existing image as shown, just to demonstrate that there are other progressions to experiment with. You casn get better "tribal-tatoo--look" if you start with a much simpler image ... vis
