I took another side trip today to Meteor Crater near Winslow, AZ. It's a giant impact crater formed when a meteor about 150 ft in diameter hit the Earth. It's also where the ending scene of Starman was shot. The thing is huge, I couldn't possibly get the entire thing in one shot so I took 9 and stitched them together in PS.

The only tools I used were PS and lots of cloning and healing. Initially I wanted to use color but it was terribly hard to get the colors to match so I used B/W instead.

If you want some perspective on just how big the thing is, check out the people on the left hand side of the image. If you ever have a chance to stop here, definitely check it out. It's five miles off of I-40 about an hour east of Flagstaff, AZ.

Big version (1000 px wide)
Bigger version (2000 px wide)

I've also got a version that's 7500 pixels wide but I don't dare try uploading that through this crappy hotel dial-up connection. I'll upload it in a few days when I get home.

Matching the colors was giving me fits. I used full auto mode on my cam so each shot ended up with a little different exposure and shutter speed. I should have used manual for consistency.

Thanks Izz man.

coooool, I've been doing panoramas a lot lately and the exposure thing is a big deal, especially if you do a 360 there's bound to be weird light somewhere in the circle. Do you have an exposure lock feature on your camera? That woud have been perect for that shot as the light seems to be fairly even across the whole of it.

That's a daggum big hole, nice photo(s)

Hey krets; looks like you're having a great trip! Any chance of a heads up for the album pages like the balloons when ya get them all up? I'd feel a bit voyeuristic (?word) just stomping around all through your gallery. Be great

Ian: The balloon photos are all online now. Feel free to take a look.

I uploaded the extra-super-huge version of this photo as well. Just a warning: it's 7000px wide and 3.5 MB but there's a load of detail in it.

Nice works birthday boy
I've tried stitching photos and found it deleriously frustrating, well done on your "sewing". The Balloons as well, in fact the whole Album made great viewing.
