Must be the cold days of winter again... a great bunch of oldbies has returned to wreak havoc upon the halls once more.

So, Slo, you ripped the forum a new one. Nice one. Technically nothing's wrong, but the text seems a little out of place. Maybe you could rip your name into the forum instead of a hole?

WB Sloloem, I think the torn effect is great, but the text is a bit weak. Along with Mahjqa's idea, my suggestion would be to make the text larger, perhaps even larger than the torn bit reveals, showing just enough of your name underneath to recognise it. That and a more handsome text.
Still good work though. I might "rip" that idea for myself

I would've loved better text. The problem lies in the fact that I just built myself a new computer and neglected to transfer all my old fonts before I wiped the old comp and gave it to my mother.

Anybody know where I can download some font packs?
and I do like that idea of having the name not completely showing.
One thing I should probably do is match the hole to that blue color in the back. I knew something was bothering me with that color.
More with the sig later tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks for the welcome back you guys...and Tao, nice...always a fan of the treble clef.

Heh, was wondering if you were still stalking around here, eye.
When was my last post, 2002? 2 years of high school and a semester of college later. I'm back again...hopefully I'll stick around longer even though I have less time now that I have a real job plus full time student.

I decided to snare myself with some photoshop pong with silence, so that's going on in its proper forum for all to view.

Thanks for the fonts, Tao, I'm sure I'll be able to use them somewhere...

BUT now it's time to go makeout with my calculus book...I have a final exam in 9 hours and I need a 70 to pass the course.

Before I forget, kukus reminded me in another thread that there is a FAQ on fonts here
faq: Do you know any good resources for free fonts?
I see where you are going with this and it does look good. However, if you were wanting the BG blue to look like the Asylums you need to use #081429, not #0c182d.
What method did you use to get such a good looking torn effect?

The torn took some random stuff...
If memory serves this is basically what I did:
I made a channel of the oval shape, and made a copy of it. On the first shape channel I did a guassian blur (without keeping the selection) so fade the edges a bit and then ran a crystalize filter. Blured the channel again but only like 1.4 pixels this time and a sucession of 3 sprayed strokes filters: The first 2 with exactly the same settings and the 3rd going the opposite direction with different settings so that strokes from both directions are seen. Then run a torn edges filter. Repeat the procedure for the 2nd channel, with slightly different settings, especially on the guassian blur and torn edges filters. Then do a calculation and add the 2 channels.

Yeah I bet 1 channel would've been enough but this made the edges a bit more random.
On the actual layers my memory gets a bit foggier. I did a bevel layer style to make it look indented then made layers out of the style, extended the shadow by hand (just made it extend past the edge of the shape and blurred it) The thing I think really key to the torn look is this: I selected the shape of the tear from the channel again, and inverted the selection. Now this is were I'm not 100% sure what I did but the key is to make a white layer set to pin light blending that's grouped with the background layer (The blue right now) that adds an edgeing effect to the entire shape.

I can upload the PSD if you really wanna look at everything to clarify.

Did I go overkill for a torn effect? It really didn't take that long and was mostly messing around.
