Is it possible to apply two backgrounds to the same cell and control which is displayed on top of the other?

nope
You'll have to insert a redundant SPAN or a DIV for that or to put the second bg image to the first P of the cell. Or if you're crazy you could leave your markup as is and use a PHP script to mix the 2 background images in a single one.

What would you be using this for? Background colours can be switched via CSS and Javascript. There's an article on http://www.alistapart.com about it, I believe

Bummer... No biggie. I just find lately with my designs I'm wanting to have two background images tiled... just for download times and ease to update. For example my current design has a gradient and stone running down each side.

I was hoping to have the gradient and stone be two different tiles, again to cut down on file size but also I could easily update the background colors (or what not) without playing with the stone.

Thanks for the info.

Well, actually you could put the gradient in bg of the BODY, and the stone in bg of the container DIV.
