This is an interesting, and to me new and partly convincing look on the war on terror.
Please note that I do not in any way agree with everything said and claimed in this, however, it does make you think.

This is a realplayer stream, almost an hour long, it's worth it though.

This was shown a while ago on the Beeb and repeated this week.

Its actually a three part series and it is worth seeing all three to get the full scope - its what I call "the Watchmen Theory" - that some people think we really need an external threat to help keep our society cohesive and cooperative and if they don't have such a threat they'll manufacture one or at least coopt an existing one.

It is also interesting when it looks at how the neo-cons and Islamic fundies actually "need" each other.

Very interesting stuff. One question though - is this true?

quote:
Curtis also cites the Home Office's own statistics for arrests and convictions of suspected terrorists since September 11 2001. Of the 664 people detained up to the end of last month, only 17 have been found guilty. Of these, the majority were Irish Republicans, Sikh militants or members of other groups with no connection to Islamist terrorism. Nobody has been convicted who is a proven member of al-Qaida.

I thought that they had a few al-Qaida in custody. Or is certified proven member the clue here (instead of suspected)?

WS: It says no one with connections to al-Qaida has been cnnvicted - it is possible they have some in custody although if they do and they have good evidence they should prosecute. Example we swpet up a number of guys from the Middle East in a "ricin producing cell of terrorists" except, of course, ricin is also used in the production of fake passports and they had no terrorist connections (but plenty in the people smuggling ones). Big claims keep being made when they arrest these people but so far it hasn't actually been backed up with any evidence and often they just quietly release them later.

I thought they got the Financial guy from al-Qaida in Pakistan. That would constitute one, right?

WS: I'm usnure - he may be still in custody as I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a high profile prosecution liek that yet (but I could be wrong).

This is really starting to get spooky...you know, I can't seem to really find info on just one convicted, confirmed al-Qaida member!!

I find that rather odd...you would think they would at least parade a few out in the public, just to show that the war on terror is "succeeding".

Unknown, we are talking about those apprehended since 9/11. I don't know how "accurate" the reports out of Iran are, and most of the others in Europe are "suspected" al-Qaida, or support for al-Qaida people.

I thought that the financial head had been snapped up in Pakistan. But other than that (and I haven't heard of a conviction), I don't know of any other convicted, confirmed al-Qaida members since 9/11.

There is word of two that they have in custody since last week here in Germany.

Well, I found this

quote:
Since the 9/11 attacks, some 2,700 known or suspected al-Qaeda members have been apprehended in 100 countries (although half of them were subsequently released for lack of evidence).

from this source The War on Terrorism
in 2002
but I don't know how accurate that is, and it doesn't mention if any are confirmed members of al-Qaida and convicted.

Things are now moving forward on the remaining detainees:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/guantanamo/story/0,13743,1398682,00.html

It looks like they really can't hold them any longer. They do have back up plans but some of those (like house arrest) infringe the Human Rights Act.

Also the Brits from Guantanamo will probably be released soonerrather than later (esp. considering the terrible state some of them are in):

http://www.guardian.co.uk/guantanamo/story/0,13743,1398738,00.html

Its also worth noting where they were "picked up" from - one from Afghanistan, 2 from Pakistan and one from Zambia. Can you just be scooped up from any old country and posted off to a black hole in the Caribbean and given mysterious injections? Apparently.

Hehe - yes, you can. That is nothing new. The fact that it is out in the open like this is, though.

You can access all 3 episodes and the transcripts via here:

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/video1037.htm

I'm unsure what the copyright situation is so that down to you but as far as I'm aware it is all fine for people in the UK as these have paid for via the license fee (the Beeb will be giving away large amounts of its content at some point in the future for this reason - expect firmer plans sometime around the lead up to charter renewal ).
