while captain James T. Kirk (and Spock of course), Picard and all the other Enterprise fellas still rely on the Warp Drive, we (humans) do also quite fine

Maybe they could use the sun rays on way back because they go away from the sun, isnt mars closer to the sun ? I dunno. It could only be for probes too.

In a way your remark makes me think to the "Deep Impact" project of the Nasa. Let's build a several millions dollars probe and smash it as fast as possible on a comet to see what happens.

And we are going to put this giant tube on the earth surface?
