hmmm hm hmmm hm hmmm... I am working on a character for class. Flaharb. Still have not quite nailed down the spelling of his name.

I would appreciate any insights. I started out with a cartoonish sketch, but now I want to make him look "realistic" to some degree.

Anywhoo... enough dribble....

well, first of all I think he looks a bit mechanical, there doesn?t seem to be enough life in him, according to his bodily structure.

the connection between upper and lower torso makes it look especially mechanical, like as if they are unrelated parts joined together.

My advice is to try to create a bodily connection as whole, because he really looks like he is composed of individual parts that do not seem to join together.

Think of how gravity would affect his belly. It shouldn't look like a balloon and a cylinder on top of it.
Legs would be a bit winder apart and also show connection to his belly.

take a look at the Mark Behm's example http://www.markbehm.com/video/chess.mov

much much better

well so far I can say is try not to focus on any anatomical features, keep it simple.

You still can make him fat, but go for more cartoony version...

an example from Victor Navone animator at Pixar.
