Topic awaiting preservation: IE7 and the web standards

It seems the IE team have finally heard the crowd urging them to import the support of web standards in IE7. So long, when it's up to web standards we can browse happy.

It's encouraging to know that they read positioniseverything.net. That one website helps me identify 95% of my IE CSS issues. If they fix those issues the door will be open to so much hackless CSS goodness.

yep. They made a step in the good direction, but in the article they seem reluctant to work on CSS3 though some parts of it are already in RC stage. Some other browsers have already begun to implement CSS3, and the status of the CSS3 will be closer to final recommendation at the time of the release of IE7.

Well it is a step in the right direction. Althougth I don't think we'll be giving up all the hacks though. After all we still have IE 5 and 6 to support. My only fear is that the hacks that work for 5 and 6 will cause problems in the standard supported 7. The ol' " * html " hack comes in pretty handy.... although they do talk compatability alot in those articles.

Yes, beucase it' always easier to get that kind of thing out of the way out in the public eye. It's the law of inverse relevance. The less you intend doing something the more you have to talk about it.

It will just be another release. Someone will have to find a hack to fix other problems, and with a new version, maybe the hacks will be even harder to make.

jive, you're right we will still need to be using the hacks as long as we support IE 5.5 and 6, however if standards have been implemented correctly in IE7, or at least with the doctype specified like IE 6 tried, then the hacks should be ignored or worked around as they are with other browsers. It's usually because of the the poor support that hacks work on browsers.

As far as CSS3 support goes, from what I understand a lot of CSS3 implementation is directed towards more visual eye candy suck as trasparency effects, (something I DO hope they implement straight away). I'd rather they get things right before adding extra features in, I'm sure MS won't let us down with extra features eventually though.

CSS3 is not what I'd call an extra feature. The most important modules ( selector, color, text, media, ... ) are already in RC stage and seem extremely usefull. Think about the :first-child and :last-child pseudo elements, or the :nth-child and :nth-of-type pseudo classes : no need to hack/slaughter the markup to produce some neat zebra tables. The indirect adjacent selector might be handy. The text-overflow property ( which has been an IE only feature for a while now ) is now standard, and the selection of the media allow some restriction on the width/height/resolution/color depth of the media.

By the time of IE7's release date, the status of CSS3 will be closer to official recommendation. If MS don't work on CSS3 right now, I fear we'll to wait 7 years to see it implemented correctly like for CSS1 and 2.

I'd like to see a move toward XHTML 2.0, whose 6th public Working Draft is published since july 2004.

It looks as if MircoSoft is backing away from any commitment to implement CSS2 in IE7.

The same article says that IE7 will support PNG. However, they don't say to what extent. It may be no more support than you already get in IE6.

Hakon Wium Lie, CTO of Opera Software and the father of CSS, with the Web Standards Project sets The Acid2 challenge to Microsoft. Actually the Acid2 challenge is aimed at MicroSoft and IE7, but all browsers claiming to support CSS will have to face embarrassement if they faill to pass it.

FF 1.0.3 passed the Test!

I got the Hello World in blue and the yellow smily face, that displayed correctly.

I don't know what you're smoking, but no browser has yet passed the test.

Ditto here. I just tried the acid test with FF 1.0.3 and got a smiley face that looks like it was blasted with a shotgun at close range.

And WS has some pretty potent stuff in that peace pipe of his. That could possibly be the source of his hallucinations.

IE7 beta 1 (will) support the alpha channel in PNG images. Pheww, that was about time. And before you jump in the air, don't forget that IE7 beta is only due for this summer, and only for winXP SP2.
