I happened to stumble upon this (again ) the other day...
... these may be a little macabre to some... but that's not the point.
Anyways... the following are moral dilemmas to get you thinking

What would you do, and more importantly, *why*??

--------------------
Question 1:
--------------------

For an all expense paid, one week vacation anywhere in the world,
would you be willing to kill a beautiful butterfly by pulling off its
wings?

The Choices Are:

(1) Yes. I'd kill the Butterfly without a second thought.
(2) Yes. I'd kill it but with reservations.
(3) No. I wouldn't kill the Butterfly.
(4) I'd kill a cockroach but not a Butterfly.

--------------------
Question 2
--------------------

Would you kill your pet for $50,000? What if someone offered to give
$50,000 in medicine and food to needy children domestically or
overseas and this donation would probably save a few lives if you put
your dog or cat to sleep? Would you sacrifice your pet to save a few
children you never met?

The Choices Are:

(1) Yes. I'd kill it in both circumstances.
(2) No. I wouldn't kill it in either circumstance.
(3) I would kill it to save the children but not for $50,000 to myself.
(4) I'd kill somone elses pet but not my own.
(5) If I didn't have children I would have it killed to save the children.
(6) THis QUestion is too hard. You suck!

You need to have in mind a family pet like a cat or a dog. Not a
goldfish and not an aging pet on the fritz. Think about if those were
your children. Would you want or expect the person to kill their pet
for them? Does your own action differ? Double standards?

Question # 1

1) Yes. I'd kill the Butterfly without a second thought. Butterflies are very common, and killing one will not make a big difference in the scale of things.

Question # 2

(3) I would kill it to save the children but not for $50,000 to myself. If I need the money bad enough to kill my pet, I can find another way to get it, other than killing my pet. But I would kill one life, to save many others.

I would kill the questioner.

1. I don't think I'd kill the butterfly, there's some pretty big beautiful ones out there , and I can travel on my own hard earned money!

@Webshamen, ever heard of the butterfly effect?

2. I wouldn't kill my pet, people are always going to be dying somewhere, I wouldn't take the life of my brother, sister, son, daughter or pet, it's all the same to me. I'm certainly not responsible for their deaths, maybe I can help them but that's it.

Question #1

3. Definitly a no-go. That is just selfish and inhumane. I wouldn't even kill a cockroach to go on a trip. Escpecially by pulling its wings off. That is cruel. How would you like someone to pull your arms off?

Question #2

3. I love my dogs dearly. And whoever would do something like that is cruel. But if those were my only options, then I would have my dogs put to sleep. I couldn't do it myself though (I have dealt with enough pet deaths with my cats). I could not justify someone's death because of my inaction.

Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you, rebuke a wise man and he will love you.

1. an all expenses paid vacation is not motivation enough for me to pull wings off a butterfly ... a brand new audi convertible , though, that's another story ... i'd have to think long and hard about that one...

2. i wouldn't ever 'kill' my cat. that's too harsh a word. i WOULD have it 'put down' or 'put to sleep' though to save starving children, probably because i've subscribed to the Christian ideal of sacrificing the one for the many... and 'putting Max down' for just the money would depend on how desperately i needed the $50,000 (say i needed to pay for my sister's kidney transplant..)

i don't believe in black and white.

I'd answer 1 to both questions. Am I horrible?

[edit] To answer the question of why, for #1 I consider my comfort over an insect's life. Sorry about that. For #2 I consider the lives of poor starving children over that of a dog's. That's reasonable isn't it?[/edit]

As of now I'd choose 1 for both. On the other hand, while I'd have no problem killing a butterfly for purely selfish reasons I assume I'd have a change of heart if it was my actual pet being killed.

(2) Yes. I'd kill it but with reservations.

(2) No. I wouldn't kill it in either circumstance.

..and that's me.
