Alright Google springs to the forefront of web tricks again using the ability to prefetch links with Firefox

Google Explains

Look at the webmaster link to see how to integrate this feature into your website.

Basically it allows you to prefetch pages in the browser while it's not doing anything, so when you click on a link the page is already loaded in cache and pops up instantly. Not all google search results do this, but search for "stanford", sit for a bit and then click on the first link.

And it's apparently standards complient not a browser specific trick

Won't that cause web site owners to think that people are clicking links to their site when they're not really? =(

Looks like it. The webmaster FAQ says the header is marked as such "X-moz: prefetch". At least you would know if you log that data.

Proprietary code: bad.
Google mixing with Mozilla: bad.

Google better watch out or Firefox/etc will just get forked into something better and kill the existing project.

yeah, and if everybody's prefetching pages, everybody will be looking through their fingers... because the server is overloaded...
