As stated in an earlier post i am running linux on an laptop, but since i this experiment is gone very well i want to do more with the laptop. So i want to do some web designing on it. I just don't know exactly which tools i do need. The next things are already installed:
the bluefish editor, apache and php, some commandline editors and no emacs. I got an java sdk and the gnu java compiler, my Xwindows is based on XFCE a lightweight desktop environment. Adding some image tool (gimp?) and a database system MYSQL/berkley database would get me started i guess. If anyone knows better tools for use on linux please let me know ok?

That should be enough. There are more graphic packages you could get, but for general purpose stuff The GIMP should be plenty.

If you're into 3D, try Blender.
If you're a control freak (or get paid to make cross-browser compatible sites), you might want to get some emulation type software to run Windows & Mac OS browsers.

I've converted to linux 99% (still have a windows drive for world of warcraft =). Bluefish is very nice but a little quircky but nothing horrible. I expect it to get a lot more polish next time they release. Gimp is incredible. There are only a few things photoshop can do that it can't. and there is a LOT if can do that photshop can't. However Its a interface (though seriously improved in the 2.0+ releases) still has a very steep learning curve. One tip I find essential is the dynamic shortcuts. Mouse over any menu item, and then press a key combination like ctrl-alt-shift-p and it'll set that as the hotkey to that command. I've copied over the few PS ones I can't get out of the habbit of using. That makes the learning curve a bit easier.

If you want to play with vector graphics get inkscape. Its a wonderful piece of software and VERY intuitive. Much easier to learn and play with than the gimp.

Get the package imagemagic. Its a command line batch image editor that can save you tons of times when you need to do the same function to a gazillion images.

Since you're using XFCE, firefox is probably you're default browser. You may want to install a KHTML based browser as well, especially if your distro allows you to do so without installing much KDE. While the people that actually use that browser are minimal, it provides a decent estimate of how your page will act on a mac with safari if you don't have one handy. Might want to grab links, lynks or elinks if your interested in how your page's look in text only browsers.

Speaking of KDE, they have a web development suite called Quanta. I'm not a KDE fan so I haven't tried it, but it you're not set on xfce, or don't mind kde libs in the background it would be worth checking out.

Check out the Eclipse IDE. There are Eclipse plugins for just about anykind of programming/coding you can imagine, and best of all it is free.

I like Quanta a little better than Bluefish. Personal preference i'm sure. Other than what you have already, you should be fine.

Good luck with Gimp. I found it to be REAL quirky and kind of difficult to get around in.

Unlike Schitzo I dig KDE. A little more like Windows I guess. Also check out Fluxbox. It's really cool and has some nice features that other WM's don't have

To flatten the learning curve when switching from Photoshop to GIMP, try GIMPshop. It's a patch that makes GIMP's menu structure more Photoshop-like.
