Was doing a little surfing last night and the handy little "Updates are Available" popped up. It was for FF 1.0.3

So...i updated. After FF restarted I am having some big problems.

1. Can not install extensions
2. Can not install themes
3. opening a tab and typing the URL in the address bar results in nothing. Just keeps opening new tabs. Even after i set the tab prefs to load in same window

Had to completly uninstall FF and reinstall. Even after doing that, nothing. When I check what extension I don't have any. Even though the WebDeveloper bar shows and works still, it doesn't show it in the Extensions window.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I'm sure you've already checked but, I believe the installation notes say that you can't install it over a previous version, or something to that effect. It recommends that you install into a clean folder, so you should delete your previous FF folder. I believe they also advise disabling your current extensions prior to upgrading.

I followed their advice and have had no problems with upgrading from any of the previous versions.

When trying to copy my profile to get FF working on my USB stick, I had messed my version of FF 1.0.1 and later 1.0.2 ( since I installed the update OVER the 1.0.1 ).

Before installing the 1.0.3 I backed up my bookmarks and grabbed the URL of my extensions ( in the .RDF ), removed FF 1.0.2 completely ( including the profile folder ). Now everything works like a charm.

I've installed Firefox 1.0.3 over versions 0.9 and 1.0.2 and both worked flawlessly...So I don't know what to tell you, C:\

I think he meant he uninstalled and re-installed and now FF works, but yeah, AlterEgo, it would be nice if you told people what you did to get something working.

C:\, I think Emps had some similar problems when he wanted to give earlier versions of FF a try and eventually fixed them by getting rid of all the profile information that isn't stored in the installation dir but somewhere under C:\Documents and Settings\.

I'll have a look for the thread at the GN....

/** Yep it's here:

http://gurusnetwork.com/discussion/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2787

and the bit that did it for Emps (though not the profile thing but extensions that needed to get removed properly):

quote:
Emps, there are some instructions on how to remove extensions here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/index.phtml?title=Firefox_:_FAQs_:_Uninstall_Extensions

even including an extension that allows you to uninstall other extensions - pretty weird, but perhaps worth a try

Are you getting any error messages when trying to start FF? I guess this isn't it, but who knows:

I just did what was suggested by Lacuna and uninstalled 1.0.2 before re-installing 1.0.3.

You need to uninstall, delete the directory Firefox was installed into & delete your profile directory. Save a copy of your bookmarks first and you may as well keep the 'plugins' folder to put back in. Install the new Firefox, put the plugins folder back in, reinstall your extensions, theme(s) and redo your settings. Done.

What was all that supposed to do? I just unistalled the old one and installed the new one. All my bookmarks, extensions, themes, etc. remain intact. Done.

well..........on every other firefox install I did, the update thing worked fine. this time, it didn't

lesson learned.

I actually took kuckus' advice and did it that way. i went ahead and installed from the site, the extensions i use. Some of the themes however, want to download as .rar files. Now, I have to figure out how to do that. Not a problem. I figure it out or just live with it. Just glad that I got Firefox to work.

Firefox 1.0.3 ate my profile Uninstalled 1.0.2 before installing .3 and it ate... everything. All my themes, extensions and bookmarks, very much gone. Oh well, ho hum... just wanna install 1.0.3 (again, something went screwy in the last install and I haven't had time to fix it) and get back out of Internet Exploder.

edit: This is... unusual. After the reinstall, even though my profile has apparently gone, Firefox is still remembering my Home Page... investigations as to where my profile is actually supposed to be stored seem to be in order...

I've found if you open your themes window you can drag and drop the file from your desktop or a folder, this also works for some extensions that 'download' instead of installing.

I would imagine all you have to do is extract it, check that the contents look right (compare to other themes, maybe), then zip it up and rename it .jar.
Jar files are just renamed zip files.

Just open the file from Firefox

I found this upon reinstalling Firefox too... my solution? Don't use the 'Install now' link, instead go into the theme information page itself and use the install link in there, that one gets picked up by the themes engine.
