Gosh, I haven't been here in a while, but...

Can anyone here identify the header font used by Time magazine in the 1940's? Or is it a custom typeface?

An example: http://www.library.upenn.edu/exhibits/rbm/stokowski/93.jpg

probably custom, though

If I rember correctly I believe it's a custom font.

But might get you close, accept for the "M" would need to be modified

Goudy Light -- http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/goudy-series/light/
ITC Tiempolo -- http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/itc-tiepolo/bold/
Danmark URW T -- http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/danmark/urw-t-medium/

TrajanPro -- That ships with creative suite pro, is also close except for the M missing half a serif on bottom right.

Classica Bold, looks about as close as I could find, I might be a bit thick but might do the trick. http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/presencetypo/classica/bold/

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm pretty sure it is a custom font, but I've found a couple of decent lookalikes. As jstuartj mentioned, the main thing about the TIME font that sticks out is the distinctive M, with its trapezoidal shape and lack of serifs at the top. Trajan comes the closest, so I guess it'll have to do. Thanks again.
