Alright I've always pronounced MySQL as "My Sequel" while a friend says My "Ess Q El".

How do you prounounce it?

It is pronounced ' my - s - q - l '

The language used to communicate with most relational databases is also known as ' S-Q-L' , which stands for structured query language.

But if you are bound and determined to follow Microsoft, by all means throw the term 'Sequel' around at every opportunity.....

From the MySQL website

quote:
The official way to pronounce ``MySQL'' is ``My Ess Que Ell'' (not ``my sequel''), but we don't mind if you pronounce it as ``my sequel'' or in some other localized way.

Personally I have always prefered "My es que el" although I often say "My sequel". I have a friend who says "My squeel"

my rpg teacher always says my sequel, drives me up the wall... just like rpgII, rpg 400 and the whole damn OS/400 system

Aye, "My Sequel" just sounds stupid - these guys in one of my classes used to say it that way all the time, and they were major boneheads to begin with, so it just added a certain shroud of stupidity to that pronounciation (for me).

I call, and think it S-Q-L. I find that loads of people call it sequel, and it makes me cringe. I wish I knew why.

obviously it is technically "s - q - l"

but like any other such thing, "how to say it" evolves with usage.

Personally, I say 'sequel'.

Why? Very simply because it's easier than saying "s - q - l".
It is a very common thing, we do it with many other acronyms - why not this one?

!

I've never heard anyone pronounce it any other way than "My Ess Q El"... so you people who pronounce it "sequel" are just weird. Must be a regional thing.
