Ok, first off, I would like to say I'm off school for the summer, so thats a plus for my relationship with the Asylum. So now I could very well reach past 300 posts.

Anyhoo, on with my question:
I currently make desktop wallpapers for 800x600 and 1024x768 (which I currently use). Now I feel I need to go bigger. What higher resolutions to most people use? (Even note yours while your at it.)

I use 1400x1050 (native resolution of my LCD), and I can't physically bring myself to use anything less than 1280x1024. I generally find myself taking 1600x1200 desktops and resizing them down to my resolution, since 1400x1050 is unusual.

So, my recommendation is, make wallpapers for 1600x1200 (super high-end crowd), 1280x1024 (slightly-high-end), and 1024x768 (average Joe). The people who still use 800x600 need to upgrade, and if they can't, they can always just have 1024x768 resize.

I actually use the 1152x864 rez. But the Windows stretch feature tends to work fine for me with a 1024 wallpaper

Agreed, 1280x1024 is usually my minimum.

Ooh! Thanks!

I plan to rerender some old 3D images I made in the past. The old ones are too small for desktops and were not rendered with anti-aliasing. So when I rerender them, I'll make sure to render at 1600x1200 and of course turn on anti-aliasing. Then I can just use Photoshop for the lower resolutions.

Since my computer isn't the fastest, I'll start rendering one tonight. *thinks* I hope my computer can even handle it. Oh well, there's only one sure way to find out!

Yep, one more vote for the 1600x1200 crowd. And again, never less than 1280x1024.

Just made a quick wallpaper as a test:

Original: Cubic Brightness

Photoshoped: Cubic Darkness

Let me know what you think!
These wallpapers were just a test. I don't remember the render time... probably less than an hour. But these were basic, it'll go slower once I hit the bigger stuff.

I wouldn't ignore the 1024x768 crowd if you want to satisfy as many people as possible. I *would* ignore the 800x600 crowd.

Please remember that 1280x1024 is a different aspect ratio than the other resolutions, so if you produce images for that resolution you should either horizontally crop or vertically extend the image to fit the 5:4 aspect ratio. Don't give people stretched images!
