Focus on the cross in the center and the purple dots will magically disappear.

I don't remember the exact term for this, but it's something like complementary color or persistance. Your eyes are use to one color, when it suddenly change, you brain compensante it, thus a magenta turning grey will look green for a short period of time. A Blue turning grey will look yellow ...

That's brilliant! A green dot that isn't there, and a series of purple dots that appear to disappear - perceptions is a fickle thing, huh?

I think it has to do with a mix of theories, which includes the percistance of vision. Red and Green being complimetary colors if mixed properly produce neutral gray color, the same color the background is, shove in the theory of percistance of vision and you have this illusion.

Hey... I seen this before...
Still cool though, I think I've seen a better optical illusion somewhere, but this is the best one of those I still remember.

That got me interested in colour-based illusions, so I went looking and found this one:

Just stare at that blue patch...

Neato. I see a green-yellow spot in the neighborhood of the blue spot.

Oh. Well, um... it was actually supposed to fade away altogether. lol

The yellow/green patch you're seeing is where your eyes are wandering very slightly from the same spot - but the illusion would not work so well with a central focal 'spot' (like the black cross in the initial post) as it would influence the viewer's colour perception.

Aha! A more detailed version of the first illusion: Rapid after-image demonstration.

This one allows you to change the colour and saturation in order to see various 'opposing colours', and explains in some detail how the illusion works. Do check it out.

Here's another one from the same site that demonstrates motion-induced blindness with a similar result.

WH: I noticed that the blob in the center started to disappear, but I found it hard to concentrate long enough for it to disappear completely. I kind of got tired of having to pick my eyeballs up off my keyboard and stick them back into my head.

And I love that site you just linked to. I discovered that a while ago and went through every one of the illusions. I love this stuff.

Ahh, all excellent illusions. I've seen all of these before. I really love the wobbly pattern ones! Some really fun items. For something somewhat related, you should check out Wendy Carlos' color vision page, which has a bit of a tutorial as well

Slime: I've always loved that one. No matter how many times I see it, and despite the fact that I "know" the squares are the same color, I always think, "No way on God's good earth that those two squares are the same color." It's one of those illusions that absolutely refuses to calculate even after you know the truth.

I'm going to descend into D&D dorkiness here for a moment, but I used that example to explain to someone why they had to roll to disbelieve an illusion even after their character had been told that it was an illusion. I found a book with this illusion in it and showed it to the guy. "These two squares are the same color," I said. "No way," he said. "Exactly," I said. "Now roll."
