Hi, for some reason when i start a new PS file, I go to filter drop down menu and most of the filters there are greyed out, But it is fine when I open an already made picture, all the filters are there when I open a picture from my computer.

I'm thinking this is a dumb question, but it's been bugging me and would like to solve this.

Well if no filters are showing up, it is likely you are creating a new file that is a either index color, You will also experiance a limited list if filters when working in CYMK, grayscale, or 16 bit mode, as many filters only work in RGB.

If the above is not the case; are there pixels selected or is the layer you are on transparent, locked or empty?

Hmm, I have the color mode at RGB and 16 bits.., and I usually start it as transparent background, I've tried it with white but still the same thing..

Nevermind..just switched to 8bit and the filters popped back out, I acknowledge the fact that Im a newbie . But why is it that the filters wont work at 16 bit?

Basicly, the reason is they simply have not been programmed to support 16bits. Most are never used, so adobe hasn't wasted their efforts in updating them. Support has slowly been increase in the later version however. Most of the truely useful filters such as blurs, sharpens and USM are functional for 16bit images under CS. CS2 may have better 16bit support but I haven't upgrade yet so I can't comment.
