just wanted to let you know that "A List Apart 4.0 hits the deck" if you ask me, the new design is really something you have to get used to.

I must say I love the new design. It looks really pro and feels like a book. The font-size in the PRE is too small to my taste but I'll adjust it in my userContent.css

It's a little wide, isn't it?

Yes, we all have high resolution screens now, but does that really mean we have to give all of our space to our browsers?

Otherwise, I like it.

Yeah - unbelievably wide.

I have browser set fairly wide by default....had to drag it out significantly to get rid of the scroll bar.

It looks great - but what the hell were they thinking with that width??

Mmm, a web design site with a fixed width.

Considering most of the people visiting their site would defineltly not be using anything below 1024w, I can see why they might have thought this a good idea.

Aside from the wideness, I like the design and how the information is being presented, very clean and orderly.

I agree, it's great, but wide. Not that the width bothers me so (I have a virtual screen dedicated to Firefox at most times), but the text column in articles just seems to be so much wider than necessary.

It is, however, very clean, very elegant, and very attractive. It's these sorts of reasons why ALA is a great place to visit: they're not just talk.

After reading the comments while waiting for the link to finish downloading, I was waiting to see what all the fuss is about with the screen width. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I didn't need to resize my browser at all.

Unless they changed it in the interim, I think the width is fine. I do have a fairly wide display (1400pix), so that may have something to do with it.

I have to say I like the new look.

My issues is that screen size has nothing to do with how large my browser window is.

My browser *usually* ends up being between 900 and 1000 pixels wide, which I feel is *plenty* wide to accomodate any reasonable website.
When visiting sites with image galleries, or reading long lines of preformatted code, or the like, I'll temporarily maximize my browser.

But I shouldn't have to do that just to simply view a primarily text-based site.

There is simply no need for the width, and it is - to me - a very serious detraction.

Well the width of the site has been a large point of contention in many forums and discussion boards. When people started using 800px wide designs people went crazy most sites before then had been designed for 640px resolutions, at the end of the day though I don't think it matters, the new A list apart site should really have liquid layout, or at least a choice, something like the Simplebits webiste has (check out the two buttons on the right side of the header and resize away!).

personally I have a screen resolution of 1400 and I keep my browser to 1024, it gives me the best size for the sites I visit andything less and I miss the beauty of a design or the content, but that's just my personal preference.

Cheers,
