I thought I asked this once before here but I did a search and came up empty handed so I guess I haven't. What forum software does Ozone Asylum run on? It appears to be a heavily modified version of UBB.classic but I could be wrong.

The reason I ask is that I am searching for a forum software and I really like how it works here on the Asylum with the tree at the top, and the 'slimies' and how that nonsense is over on the right. This type of software is what I am seeking. Screw Invision & vB.

AFAIK the Asylum is run by the Grail : a forum and wiki application mainly developped by Tyberius Prime. It's certainly built on the ashes ( most parts of the DB and the of course the overall behavior ) of the first version of the Asylum done by the Doc Ozone himself, but I wasn't there at the time.

For the record, the first version of the Asylum was run on 'casual forums'. It was then swithced over to 'invision' software.

It was deemed not worthwhile to renew the license, and in the absence of a suitable replacement, one was created by TP and others.

huh? I don't remember the invision version - I remember the ultimate bulletin.

Judging from the Way Back When Machine even in february 2001, the Asylum was already running on UBB.

Contrast & compare - without the new usability, you wouldn't see much difference between the old ubb and the grail ;-).

How complicated of a setup are we talking about? What are the system requirments to run the Grail? And Tyberius, I'd like to aquire 'The Grail' if possible for use on my website.

They lie - its all done with courier mice taking the messages to TP in little acorns and he types it all out by hand. Possibly while floating in a tank full of nutrients to keep his typing speed up.

Possibly.

I was. I actually ended up starting my own casual forum because of it. I wasn't on there for long though before it became the UBB board.

the casual forums board was pretty crappy - nothing unfortunate about missing it

It wasn't around very long before the switch to UBB either.

In some far old day doc answered the same question and the answer was something like this:

"'..The forum is based on UBB with her and there some javascripts for funtionality, there are some modified C files and the whole thing is kept together with Perl scripts. The whole thing is a programmers nightmare and very hard to maintain..." And if i recall correctly Doc decided to get some help and the Mad Scientists came around for the first time. This happend somewhere around 2001 i think.

well I know for a fact that this boards is a very very modified/glorified version of one of the original board systems which was known as Ultimate BulletinBoard or UBB for short .. but I assure you it is far from its original creation .. so in trying to duplicate or use the very same BB langauge this is based on currently will 99.9% wont happen

if you are unsatisfied with vBull and Invision .. I have found a liking for the WBB or Burning Board .. link to site .. take the time to check it out .. there is a free version of this board available and tons of mods/hacks that will make it run like a paid versions that are offered .. I personally use to run a vBull and loved it but since funds have been tight I have grown very fond of wbb/Burning Board .. very easy to work with and customizable with any coders needs/wants .. if in any case do some research on wbb .. see if it is too your liking

edit: found info on the UBB code used here in FAQ - follow link

RammStien: It's no longer a 'heavily modified version of UBB', it was completely rewritten from the ground up by Tyberius Prime, kuckus, myself and a few others a little while back now.

Ramm - try reading the rest of the thread

As for the 'ubb code' in the FAQ - 'UBB' has become a generic phrase for this method of formatting text in an online setting. it doesn't actually refer to this board being a UBB forum.

This is a custom made-from-scratch forum.

I was here during those early stages of the forming of the inmates community .. I think I even posted .. but DL-44 .. the first board used was a UBB = Ultimate Bulletin Board .. I'm pretty sure of that

To reiterate:

1st version of the ozone forum: Casual Forums. Of this there is no question. it was the kind of board where you view one post at a time. it pretty much sucked as far as forum software goes. lasted a few months. long before there was ever 'ozoneasylum.com'.

2nd version of the ozone forum: Ultimate Bulletin Board. This is also definite, I simply mis-spoke with my initial post, for which TP corrected me. lasted quite a long time. Somewhere in this stage, the forum was moved to its own domain.

3rd and current version: custom built by inmates. This is fairly reliable information

I am uncertain at what point it was dubbed 'ozone asylum', but it was initially simply called 'the ozone forum'
