Thanks to those who have participated, your efforts are appreciated, but this is pathetic.
I remember a time (not too long ago) when the hint of a challenge brought pages and pages of light sabres, swords or eyeballs, along with a few outstanding tutorials and a host of tips. When an Rp was several pages long.
I remember when a new person asked a simple question, it was answered with a walkthrough or tutorial instead of a link to google and a smart-assed comment.
I feel sorry for all the talented people that have lost their passion, and also for the new people that are afraid to try.

Really sad. I`m depressed.

I think the asylum has "evolved" a hullva lot.. from what you described and back again... but hey thats the fun of it.. isn't it??

A reasonable assumption: You've all seen the 'People who look most like their pets' type photo's...these photo's are usually taken at various pet-shows.

Well, a friend, recently won first prize in 'that' category.

I had 4 differrent images of him... profile, straight on/angles... bla bla... (nothing great beleive me.) I had the bird. One of his African Grays. (a mouth on this bird you would not believe.) The 'eye' on the bird is from a different pic but the beard is from the profile.

What you don't see in his profile is the 'shirt.' As I was doing the old 'play fiddle learn' thing I realized the shirt was the key..

... 'If you wear the same shirt... you win' I said. .. and so the bird, as you see him, we did a print on line thing , had it mounted on that 'foam' board..quarter inch thick maybe. I then cut it out on a band saw...sanded the sides.... ran a heavy black marker arrouond the edge and attached 'him' to the perch of a show cage.

Fun. that's pretty much where my brain's at. If it ain't fun it's no fun and if it's no fun why they hell are you doin' it !! ??

He won. =)

Something different.... and just sooo long overdue for me, is that this tuesday I'm about to start a 6 week art course..6 weeks... yes I said six weeks which I should have 'taken/started' 40 years ago. So the short and long of it is the long and the short of it.

Gonna be interesting.

And I gotta say that what I see here from the entire bunch who post up, construct & criticize was very much the deciding factor in signing up for the course.

So I give you a great round of applause... and thank you. =)

'Drawing "The Light" art class.' Learning how to draw photo-realistically.

Photo-realism isn't necessarily my favorite 'form', if you will, but it's probably closest to what I was 'trying' to do when I first and last tried 'anything' at all. These 'spats' I did probably in 1979.

I figure the course will give me some of the basics but I would have preferred something a little more 'free-form.'

I've always wanted to draw/paint/sculpt/carve..do anything art related but circumstances never really permitted. And the circumstances that now allow for some instruction are a bit odd. It was my wife who originally signed up for the course but she recenlty suffered a severe upper cervical injury resulting in unbearable pain in her right shoulder and down her arm into her hand. So there's no way she can take the course.

Then unexpectedly about a month ago this came my way.

My Great gradfathers' work. About a year ago one of his large oil paintings arrived on my door-step. And it goes nicely with 2 large watercolours of his that I've had for a very long time.

A self-portrait. Pretty decent I think. =)

Add to that, that his son... my Grandfather was a succesful 'commercial' artist (hired his dad)... I have one of Grands' water colours and few WW1 military cartoons... there's a bit of history in the family.

If one beleives in such things (I don't really) you could say I come by it naturally. I think it's more a case of the 'inspiration' being related.

So with the arrival of the pen and ink... my wife said: 'I can't take the course... you've always wanted to take a course... it's yours to refuse.'

First lesson is Tuesday. =)

Wow, nice pencil drawing! You've obviously got a talent for seeing and drawing. I've often wondered about the family connection in artists and musicians. I don't know if it's in the genes or not though perhaps it's more likely the result of constant exposure... I don't know. I do know that my father was quite a good hobby artist and my 2 daughters have shown some strong drawing skills.

I like photo realism too and think it's a great skill to learn. I remember that Betty Edwards' books (especially Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain) helped me immensely in learning how to see and that improved my still life pencil drawing no end. She might be a good accompaniment to your course. Anyway, have fun I'm sorry to hear about your wife's pain though. That sounds awful and I hope she gets better soon.

I think you've inspired me to do a pencil still life this afternoon.
