Who wants to discuss current playlists? It in no way amounts to discussions about God or webdesign, but it's mindless and entertaining.

I just thought this was too good to pass up: everyone MUST listen to the new Decemberists CD. It directly appeals to nerds and romantics and music-lovers with stories of mutinous pirates who love adventure and "tramps," love affairs with Russian spys, etcetera. It's just so good.

Anyways, it rocks. Listen to "the mariner's revenge song," "16 military wives," "the bagman's gambit," and "the infanta."

Lately I've been listening to The Duhks, Jump (Little Children), and a local band The Tim Malloys.

Last week was Joe Satriani, Enigma, Sarah Brightman, and Rush (all on one playlist)

My music tastes cover just about everything.

Thanks for the heads up for the Decemberists, am really digging them. Can't believe I'd never heard of them before.

Tord Gustavin : The Ground
Peter Serkin : Plays Takamistu
Edgard Varese : Deserts

Just got turned onto a band just a second ago that is pretty cool : Antimatter : Planetary Confinement. Pretty good stuff, spacy and such.

I absolutely love Porcupine Tree, CPrompt! And I do agree, everyone does need to check them out.

Nathus: I've seen them in concert innumberable times. They're from Portland, where I live, and have something like 4 cds and a million EPs. They put on a really good live show. As do the Dandy Warhols, especially at the Odditorium, a warehouse type area they bought and people come to for shows/hangout.

I just reloaded my little iPod tonight with a selection of The Prodigy, Beethoven, Einsterzende Neubauten, Syd Barrett, The Tear Garden, Ministry, Kelly Clarkson and Billie Holiday. It's a ridiculous mix.

These are my latest (and first) purchase on iTune:

- Arcade Fire, "Rebellion (Lies)" and "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)"
- The Longcut, "Transition"
- Kraftwerk, "The Model"
- Echo & the Bunnymen, "Of a Life"
- and for some reason (don't ask why) Meatloaf, "I'd Lie for You (And That's the Truth)"

My next purchase will probably be Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

And the Bravery, "Unconditional".

Oh yes Art Brut, had a listen to their album, they really are different. The lyrics are a good laugh and they're fresh, I find.

I also recommend a good half, not to say all of the Mercury Prize 2005 nominations.

ooohhh music!

i recently discovered Death Cab for Cutie... really liking this track...

a friend of mine recommended The Notwist (German band) - looking forward to checking them out as well.

on the playlist these days has been a LOT of rhythm... loving Kanye West's Gold Digger, Gasolina (Daddy Yankee), One Trick Pony (Nelly Furtado), and just about every dirty jam that features Lil Jon. i just don't know why...

Maybe someone can explain this to me, but what exactly is the appeal of metal? It's noise, to me. Not noise in the Sonic Youth kind of way, but noise in the hit lots of things really hard really fast kind of way?

I feel that your question would be best answered if you asked yourself and changed the word metal to [insert whatever cfb listens to frequently].

Opinions, taste .

yeah....I am guessing so. I listened to it...then came back to it and realized what good musicianship it is. I dig that they are not just really fast and meaningless riffs. There is some good composition going on there with nice chord structures that are not just the typical barre chords that you find in metal or in music in general. The mixture of heavy and acoustic is well done and not just thrown together. Trasistions between the two are very smooth and well thought out.

And by the way InSiDeR....Goona see them Nov. 7th

I think the appeal of metal to me is something a bit different. I wont listen to just any metal. I *hate* metal or any music that doesn't have some sort of audible thought process to it. Kind of hard for me to explain but if it's just a bunch of barre chords in 4/4 time...I get bored real quick. I am very picky about my music all the way around.

Used to listen to nothing but classical. Now it's just hard to find new stuff. Every recording is just a rehash of something that has been done a million times. If one more orchestra does a recording of Mozart or Beethoven I'm gonna vomit. There's so much good classical music that is being written today and the recordings of the "classical masters" has been done so well over the years, it's time for more new stuff. There are a few groups out there that do nothing but the new stuff but they are far and few in between. Kronos Quartet used to do recordings of some cool stuff then they just kind of went off in a different direction and it just didn't appeal to me.

Then I used to listen to a lot of Jazz. Still do but not as much. Not sure why.

Anyway...I guess I've rambeled enough. I could go on and on about music I miss gigging

Didn't they contribute or compose entirely to the score for Requiem for a Dream?

they played the score. Clint Mansell composed. He also did the score for Pi if you've ever seen that. Good movie.

Strangely enough being the movie buff I am, I still haven't seen Pi. Nobody in my house rents movies anymore. And I no longer have a job to support my impulsive independent film buying from Amazon.com .
