A co-worker has just gotten a Video Recorder, and wants to take the video and make DVD's on his Windows machine.

He is able to get a piece of software called Pinnacle Studio 9 for USD 20.

I have never heard of this. His use would be taking family videos and breaking them into chapters to put onto a DVD.

Does anyone have any recomendations or experience that would be helpful in deciding the software to use?

yes, pinnacle studio will be sufficient for cutting home videos. it's actually made for that.

if he wants a more professional solution, check out Adobe Premiere.

If he has XP, and I assume he does since he's got a DVD burner, Windows Movie Maker will do the simple job of hacking videos up, then use something like Nero6 for the simple DVD creation/chapters/menus/burn

That's about the cheapest/most novice setup I can think of unless the Pinnacle Studio has the authoring/burning software with it as well. I have an old hard spot for Pinnacle however and would never recommend them to anyone.

You should really get that looked at you know. =)

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I'm wondering about DVD burning... audio specifically, on an iMac G5. I know virtually nothing about Mac's... like what software it comes with etc.. Been to the Mac site but all I can see is the glossy brochure type stuff... nothing specific. Trying to help a friend.

If I had to choose I'd not use the Pinnacle software again either... the one time I did use it to author a DVD it kept crashing and crashing in the process, not much fun.

The Windows Movie Maker would be one option, another one I have gotten good results with is Magix's Movies to CD & DVD. It gets good reviews in magazines around here and is easy enough to use for all its features - plus they develop it right around my corner here in Berlin. The burning software is included, too.
