I am not into the Hollywood Hype and was laying sick in bed so that's the only reason I watched it with my daughter...As I was watching it, it only confirms my resolve not to ever want to watch it .... You figure they get enough glory from the fans, the media and not to mention the huge deposits they make in their checking accounts...and then they want glory for their artistic work. It such a night of hypocrisy. With their designer wears they get for free and usually get their jewelry loaned...they want to us to listen to their views on politics and social issues as if they really cared living high on the hog while their fellow Californians and the many of the rest of the viewing world barely make ends meet and are starving. This is why I never take Hollywood serious or watch anything related that gives them more glory....I guess as long as there is fasicnation with the rich and famous Movie Stars there will always be a eager desire to want to know their privite life and business.. I just feel like it gets so boring...

I think if you replaced "Hollywood Hype" with "Religion/Church" and "Movie Stars" with "Christians" you might have a glimpse into another point of view that would be quite valuable to you.

That said, on the point of the Oscars, I've never watched or cared. I'd catch them occassionally if the circumstances played it out but never any intention. I did not see this one either. I did however, while sitting in Sunday School yesterday look at the nominations. Some ladies in the class were having an "oscar party" whatever that is and they were handing out a list, I assume for the ladies to make pics, like a football pool or something. Anyhow long story short, this list was miles long and I had seen one movie on the whole page of movies. So who are those snobby farts making the movies FOR? Or am I just way out of touch with the mainstream?

Please explain this in more detail what you really mean.. What does the Oscars have to do with Christianity?

The average movie is made for fifteen year olds. They are the people with money who go to the movies.

When Stallone won for Rocky that's about when Oscar lost his lustre for me. Oscar became even duller when Mel Gibson won something.

I mean here we have two guys who a few decades earlier Ed Wood wouldn't have even considered for his "B" movies... and here they are winning Oscars!?... Sumpin ain't right. They don't even fit the bill as "Matinee Idols"...at least most of them could sing at least a few notes.

What was good... were Oscars 'the science & technology awards' ... It's been airing on the Discovery Channel up here (Canada) on a repeating schedule so you might want to check local listings and catch that, if you haven't because it's really quite good.

As for the Oscars.. the only thing I try to catch is the opening bit by whomever the host happens to be.

Your view on the Oscars might be different if someone you knew was nominated. My advisor and teacher was up for an Oscar (for an animated short he did) and he won, amazingly.. And it's definitely something cool to celebrate. AFAIK, he's not terribly rich, is not from California, was not wearing fancy clothes that he was loaned, etc etc etc,.. So to that, even if your post was about all the other big stars around, you are generalizing to the point of being offensive. To me, at least. Sometimes the underdogs get their day.

And hey, no one forced you to sit down and watch the tube. Vote with your remote, and go elsewhere. Or get up and take a walk outside.

Your right Xel... I was generalizing and was mainly focusing on the super rich and famous.. To be commended for your hard earned work is a great achievement and when your piers recognized it I can see where it would be honored...I guess its the public, fans who make them Gods and there is such fasination with these persons that are not really any great role models.

I know there are other great role models who do not want glory, riches or fame and do their achievements in private. Those are the ones if we know them that are ones who we should aspire to emulate.

I think you put it in better context there than in your first post. It's not the celebrities' fault that people obsess over them and look up to them as role models. They're just doing a job that shines them up in front of the world and with that kind of exposure there is always going to be a big number of fans.

I watched the Oscars because I have a fascination with movies. I want to work in the industry, and it's become a part of my life. That said, I have a motivation to watch the Oscars because that's the epitome of the industry. So what if some of the movies are made just win awards? So what if better movies made that year weren't nominated? To me, I sometimes try to think of why a certain movie won a certain award. Because the MPAA (Motion Picture Academy of America) chooses who wins and who loses, what was best and what was only interesting enough to be nominated. The MPAA owns Hollywood and funds the making of movies. And I think none of the movies nominated for Best Picture were made for 15 year olds. Crash? Capote? Memoirs of a Geisha? Hustle and Flow? None of which have subject matter that would directly appeal to a 15 year old. Granted that some 15 year olds will go watch these movies, I did when I was 15, I can't see many 15 year olds even knowing that most of these movies exist. As far as what I saw, every film nominated for best Picture had artistic merit. Crash was amazing, one of the better movies I've seen in years. I thought it deserved Best Picture, and so did the Academy. And it's certainly a big step up from Date Movie or Final Destination 3.

As for the celebrities and their hypocrisy, their designer-wear that's given to them, and their diamonds. Not all of them blew a million dollars on their outfits. As the issue was addressed, most Animators and Special Effects nominees weren't even talked to during the red carpet interviews, and what a coincidence, they actually deserve recognition. So what if three-6 mafia won an oscar for best original song. Do you think it was mediocre or hypocritical for Eminem winning an oscar? I could see you saying that again if the composer for Brokeback Mountain won instead of three-6. I see a different style of music that is now becoming appreciated in the industry, instead of the constant orchestra composers. I see the MPAA broadening their taste for tunes. After all, context is part of the criteria. "It's hard out here for a pimp," fits the theme of the movie quite well. I didn't particularly like the movie Hustle and Flow, but I see the talent that it took to perform and record the music for it.

If you don't watch the Oscars or the movies that win awards for that matter, how can you say that it's all a bunch of bullshit?

I have watched them in the past and just realized that there is more to life than trying to live thur movie stars lives...There are a great many out there that try to aspire to the life of the rich and famous.. And it isn't all that it is cut out be...Many put movie stars on pedestals...Thur the big movie industry, they are only a commodity or pawn for money making riches. That being noted many are manulipted for a profit ( the movie star and the fan)...Movies gross in the millions just from products the movies make famous.. Goodness, George Lucas is still making millions off light sabers...And we buy into it. When did the star wars movies come out in 1975??? I just think there are more concrete goals our lives can be best profited from...This is just my opinion....

How does watching Pamela Andersons big boobs and keepin up with Paris Hilton or Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie enrich my life other than curosity...

Hey, did you see Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, or Brad Pitt a the Oscars? No, you didn't. You're confusing MTV for Hollywood, the two are far apart.

Jolie was there. She's even won an Oscar for her performance in Girl Interrupted. Or did you think that Girl Interrupted was a mediocre movie too?

It isn't all a big corporate conspiracy designed to bank profit into the pockets of big mega-producers. Hollywood is a breeding ground for directors, actors, musicians, and just a general gathering for artists. Sure, there will always be some that are held higher than others by the general public. But as long as you're entertained by what and who YOU decide to watch, what difference does it make if they're rich and famous? Some people love Paris Hilton, probably more than they should. I personally can't stand her, I think she's a big publicity stunt being dug into the ground. But as long as she keeps appealing to people, she'll remain the center of focus. So it's up tp people like you and me to quit talking about her and hope that she fades away eventually.

For Sylvester Stallone, "Rocky" got him respect the old fashoined way! He earned it!

Huh? "Matinee Idols", or "could sing a few notes"? These posted opinions of yours, gives me the idea that you primarily prefer accomplished "Musical" actors, and that you follow the HYPE of hollywood, without ever recognizing gifted actors.

Seymour Hoffman, ever heard of him? Here is a recent Academy award winner, who was NOT a matinee idol, nor is he known for his ability to SING. Here is what you have undoubtedly missed.

Seymouor acted in movies that ranged from "Twister", to "Boogie Nights", "Scent of a Woman" to "Hard Eight", "Magnolia" to "Punch-Drunk Love",and don't forget his amazing acting-believability in "Owning Mahowny".

So NOJIVE, maybe you should re-evaluate your process of opinion to acting. Let alone the Oscars.

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this statement? Why should NoJive reevaluate his process of forming his opinions? After all, they are his opinions. He can pretty much do whatever he likes with them. If NoJive feels that the true definition of an actor is someone who can open a beer bottle with his belly button while tap dancing on ice skates, well, more power to him.

Just sayin'

NoJive, I meant no disrespect, I just found it puzziling, that "When Stallone won for Rocky that's about when Oscar lost his lustre for me". I mean Stallone did not win for best actor. While he did write Rocky, the Movie won on it's merits, which had nothing to do with Stallone's acting. So Oscar shined on that day. Now for me that was Stallone's best acting. Nothing he has done since then compares to that. An while he might not have won the award for best acting, the studio did take a big chance with him, and it paid off big time. The movie inspired myself and much of the nation. Not to mention that " With Stallone's nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, he joined only two others with the same pair of honors in the same year in Academy history: Charlie Chaplin (for The Great Dictator (1940)), and Orson Welles (for Citizen Kane (1941). "

http://www.filmsite.org/rock.html

As for Mel, well he didn't win for actor either, and Braveheart, for me was an amazing movie. Quite graphic, as was Rocky, and just as inspiring. And for me Ed wood would have creamed his shorts, had he either actor working for him. As for fitting the bill of "matinee Idols", I guess I'm not sure what you meant there, and "could sing at least a few notes" lost me entirely.

Have the Oscars's changed? Yup.
Were all awards justified? Probably not.
But they still are THEE needle for acceptance of greatness.
