So there I was just getting towards the end of a long render with Bryce (over two hours) when I thought I'll just go for a quick peruse through some of my favourite forums....
Earlier in the day, about eight hours earlier, I had deleted a lot of old files and some programmes that I do not use anymore. None of these are related to the browser at all as far as I can see. I had also defragged all four drives and defragged my virtual memory too, which I increased to 3meg for all drives in total.
Over a minute later after clicking Firefox it still had not loaded. I just knew something was amiss. I had not upgraded to the latest Firefox as I had heard a lot of people talking about how sluggish it seemed.
So when foxy eventually did load it was as if I had just downloaded it, no usual homepage, no favourites or alternate skin that I have had for months. Arghhh, no saved cookies, I am using the new IE to post this.
So, what do you think happened?
At the moment I have no idea, I still searching my computer to try to find my old settings, but they are not where i thought they would be. Any help to find them too would be wonderfull.
Oh yes.
As part of my deep down cleaning routine I turn off system restore before I do a complete virus scan. Then after defrag I turn sys' restore back on. So restore is out of the question. Bah

That was lucky, I had stored a recent favourites files in a safe place so now that is imported into the new version of foxy that I have just downloaded, version 1.5.0.1
Still a bit wierd though huh. ~Runs off to do another virus and buggerware scan.~

The same thing happened to Bobbins a couple of weeks ago only it was with Thunderbird. I was able to find her mail files on the drive, but Thunderbird acted as if it had just been installed. I ended up creating a new user and then telling Thunderbird to look in the old location for the new users' files. That fixed the problem.

It seems to me that every so often Windows just decides that you don't need all the files that are on your hard drive and decides to delete some at random.

Heh I think you are right hyper' sometimes the old machine likes to throw us a curve ball. I'm not really technically minded so I like to think of it as a little reminder to back up precious things and just have installed what I need. That and a good clear out and tune up whilst not slurping 12 year old single Irish malt.

Same thing happened to me a month or so ago. Initially I attributed the problem to a power outage. My 'puter usually runs 24-7, with the exception of storms and at the very moment I was shutting down because of the storm... out goes the power. And this happened just minutes after I'd updated to 1.05.

When I fired it up again, the first thing I noticed was 'bookmarks' were gone. Pissed me right off as I hadn't backed them up in a while. Ever since however FF has been, how shall I say.... 'quirky' and oddly enough quirky almost specifically with this place. For some reason very very often this place won't load unless I reboot the system.

I'm using Opera more and more.

Tao...

Your problems I'm sure can be attributed soley to 'Irish Whiskey' and easily remedied by switching to a 'SCOTCH Whiskey' ...Specifically

"Laphroaig the best single malt in the World. In 2005 we were proud to be voted 'the best of the best' in the Champions of Whisky Competition - so now it's official!"

Sounds like profile corruption. It happens a lot if you keep profiles across upgrades a few times. I usually save my bookmarks.html once a month or so to avoid losing it for something like this.

Usually the browser stops behaving weird if you start it with -profilemanager (I think that's the parameter at least, not entirely sure) and create a new, blank profile that you configure for each version you download.

Thanks Liorean, I only use one profile on my machine, and I had not upgraded to a new version for months, but I'm going to follow your advice to backup my bookmarks often. If I have to do any more workarounds like start with profilemanager I'll just bin Firefox altogether and use the new IE or perhaps....follow NoJives example and start using Opera more. Never used it before so that would be an adventure.
Also it looks like I'm going to have to clear cache and the like a lot more often now that I am on broadband perhaps.
So, Laphroaig is it "NJ", I'll have to add that to my favourites then I don't think I have tried it but I will, following your advice. Actually, I'm planning to go to the Isles of Mull, Skye and Iona sometime this year on a cetacean watch so if if have not tried it before I will then for sure. Another Scotch worth a taste is Talisker
I don't want to appear too pedantic on the subject but, Scottish "water of life" is called Whisky. Irish "water of life" is called Whiskey.
