Well, nobody specified rounded corners... so I guess it should default back to the simplest shape, which would be a square. Would be neat with an option for rounded corners though.

What, precisely, is the point of this? I get the feeling that the more semantically correct element to use would be a <div> not a <hr>

Kinda hard to say that without any context

The point, I would say, is that (as coded) Firefox will render a circle, and IE will render a square.

Not much to discuss......

Whatever, the noshade attribute is deprecated.

The specs says nothing about the exact presentation of the HR tags. So it's up to the User Agent vendors to implement it how they think is best. As of today, if you want full control of the HR style, you have to rely on some image replacement technique.

Skaarj: I second you. I'm not sure about the semantical meaning of a HR. What is the use case of a horizontal rule ? To me it sounds like a P or section separator, hence it brings no meaning that we don't already get by the sibling P/DIV.

Yes, it was merely to point out that it renders as a circle in Firefox, which I thought was odd/interesting. Without 'noshade' in there, however, it renders as a square in Firefox. I can't imagine why that is the case, unless it's just a quirk of their rendering engine.

Anywa, while one can't expect it to be that way forever, it might be fun to use the quirk in a art project type webpage.
