I'm in the middle of building a new system right now and would really appriciate comments/suggestions on video cards.

So far, I have:
Asus A8N-SLI NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 Processor
Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM SATA-150 Hard Drive
Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz

The board supports PCIe video cards (and all I have are a couple AGP cards left from an older system). However, reading through reviews of some PCIe cards, there are issues with certain Linux distros/kernals.
Right now, I'm thinking about running Slackware, and according to at least one thread at http://www.linuxquestions.org/ , all should be good as long as I compile a 2.6 series kernal, all should be well.

Does anyone here have any comments/suggestions/recommendations about any of this?
Anyone here running Slackware that I wouldn't mind me pestering them a bit if I hit a wall?

Muchas gracias,
LF

I've installed Slackware quite a few times and haven't had any problems. There were some issues at one point with NVIDIA and Slackware but they had a driver for it. I'll see if I can dig that page up somewhere.

I really haven't had any problems installing any distro of Linux on new and old boxes. There was an issue at one point that I had but it turned out to be the CD's that I burned the ISO's on. So...kind of a silly problem but the installs would fail halfway through everytime.

You really should have no problems as far as I can tell with that setup and running Slackware.

You are more than welcome to bug me along the way. My ICQ number is listed here as well as the email.

Have fun!

Good to hear, thank you.

I hope I won't have any problems with it, but it's been awhile since I installed Linux anywhere, so if I do run into something I'll drop you a message. I appreciate it.

no problem. What NVIDIA card do you have? There were some issues even with the 2.6 kernel and NVIDIA cards I think. However, those Linux guys are always making work arounds

I don't have the video card yet. I wanted to check around first and make sure there wasn't gonna be any major issues with it first.

I've got it narrowed down to one of these I think:
ASUS Geforce 6600
MSI Geforce 6600
eVGA Geforce 7300GT

Seen any of them? Heard anything about them? Had one blow up in a computer of yours?
