when i click on the image in firefox, it produces a rectangle around the image (in FF but not in IE).
can i get rid of this in FF? i.e. thru a different type of hyperlink.

That's a GUI thing - you can disable it for yourself easy, but not for other people. I know you can get around it with JavaScript, but that sounds naughty.

I ran across this FF feature again, which shows the user where they are (where the focus is).
This doesn't make sense when you are using CSS based tabs that change on hover. The user knows exactly where they are, hence no need to insult their intelligence by putting a bounding box/rectangle to show the focus. One simple solution seems to be the following:

I like the way that sites such as this use the hover and the active state for the navigation. Little bit of PHP and CSS trickery but it works really well. I used it on a site a while back and it was really helpful IMO.
