Am I the only one who's beenhaving a difficult time loading the Ozone lately? There are times when the page doesn't open at all and times out on me completely. I've tried at assorted times of the day and it's just painful lately. Been going on for at least the past three weeks or so.

Sounds like Dreamhost are having load issues again. They offer phenomenal amounts of bandwidth and storage to their users, but I doubt their ability to deliver it reliably, frankly.

Skaarjj has it. I've been developing a Gallery- and Drupal-powered site and DreamHost was far, far too slow to handle even a fresh installation of either. And, of course, any support inquiry was answered with blame placed on the software.

I love what DreamHost offers, but they simply can't back it up anymore. I've signed up with OpenSourceHost to take on the new site.

When I started seeing complete failures trying to access the Asylum lately, I knew I made the right decision.

I just got this response to a mail I sent DH's support crew yesterday:

quote:
Hello,

The server that ozoneasylum.com is hosted on has been having load
issues. This is causing all services to lag. The loads are being created
by poorly written scripts that users are running that hog CPU time. We
are actively working with these users to reduce their CPU consumption and
everything will be back to normal soon. I am very sorry for any
inconvenience this may have caused.

If the owner of the account contacts us, we can move the account to a
more stable server.

Thanks!

Patrick

I'll try to have TP contact them if he has access to the web panel, or else see if the Doc can do it. It can only get better on another server....

As much as my advice is appreciated, I second Skaarjj's opinion. The sole tone of the Helpdesk's reply irks me...
"it's all because of our other customers", is that the idiocy I read?

I'd say sayonara instantly, or I'd set my conditions and would issue a single, solitary warning.

...If I am in a good mood, that is.

If moving the asylum to a reliable place is necessary and costy, I am even willing to give bucks.

Actually, we kind of did, due to having only application level profiling.

We had an 80 kb PHP file contain a large array definition, that was parsed on every page ( to save database lookups, actually. PHP parses every piece of code on every request...).
Turned out, 90% of the load the Asylum produced was parsing that stupid php file.
Removed it, deferred the database lookups for when they're actually needed ( usernumber => cellnumber, we can do that when you actually visit a cell ),
and boom, we dropped way way below the 'you are using to much resources' stats dreamhost does have.
(And yeah, the were definite about us needing to remove this).

That was months ago though... probably more than a year, but I'd need to look it up.

so long,

Yep, sounds like a typical modern DreamHost reply. But I wouldn't agree that moving to another server would necessarily make things better. Maybe for a time, but trouble would eventually rear its head again.

Right now, I'm keeping my static-page sites at DreamHost because I don't feel like moving them yet, and they seem to work fine. But I won't even try to run any PHP/MySQL sites there anymore.

I'm actually running a test account now over at www.1and1.com - they may not be great, but they are big, that can be either good or bad? Frankly, I'm having trouble with several hosts right now, notably Dreamhost (not just for the asylum, but other sites as well) and also OLM.net (I have a major client there. Everything is currently down there now. Plus some idjit deleted a 500MB database of EVERYTHING that made that business a business. Fortunately I got backups.)

Perhaps we should spend some time on this thread discussing the best webhosting outfits currently? We need top-end server farms, multiple fat pipes through several backbones, extra points awarded for a decent backend and reliable service. An open policy about sharing what when wrong when things do, that would be a plus IMHO.

So, how's life otherwise? Malin and I just got back from Sweden, we have a little house out there now. If we had 15 of them we could sell them and buy a single house here in San Diego instead! =)

I've been swampered with a new client lately, a "network marketing" firm believe it or not. They have good cash flow and I charge per hour, so it's all cool, heh. The store www.deepFLING.com is doing well, Malin started stocking scandinavian clothing as well as Jewelry, so we're expecting a bang-up Christmas.

On topic though; if we were to change hosts, where should we go do you think?

Coolness. Saw your Jewelry site, Doc, and the little things look great (I am not talking about the models, those are darn beautiful,
gotta love sweden - although I've only been to Finland, in the area of Turku, and in Helsinki).

I am using www.infomaniak.ch
And the only area where they are messing up is spam control.
5GB space.
200GB bw a month.
500 email accounts.
Php/mysql and all useful extensions.
100 Swiss francs a month.
Currently, I am standing a "meager" load of a few hundreds MBs downloads a month, 250000+ hits, and everything is running smoothly.

1and1 is decent and insanly large. They and Strato host quite a chunk of german domains ( think millions) - and .de is second only to .com in size.
I've been with them for a few years, first on shared hosting, then on a dedicated server, later moved to Strato* ( they did have the better server offer), and their hosting is sound if sometimes quirky ( webservers silently delivering misCased documents. You have a myDoc.html and the server will happily serve it up as mydoc.html. Drove my little sister nuts when we changed hosts )

Don't expect anything 'non-standard' from them though - they won't even install php modules for you on a 'managed root server'.

What they do have is multiple pipes from different networks, well constructed and administrated data centers (with a huge ups system of course. They have to call the power supply company before testing it. Seems those guys don't think it fun when 2 megawatts of consumption drop from the powergrid all of the sudden...)

In other news, Domainfactory here in Germany offers the most reliable service I've ever seen in a hoster.

*Strato is a no no for non-server hosting though. They've lost serveral TB of customer data a few years back...

Mauro: 100 swiss francs a month? I'm renting my own box for 25 euros a month. With just about 10 times of everything

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems, but sad that it's a widespread issue. Today is the first time I've been able to get to the Asylum during the day in ages (US Central time zone, btw). I was actually surprised the site loaded for me.

Hope the research for a new host comes out fine. I don't have any suggestions, I'm afraid, since my site is hosted by my gaming guild's webmaster. I don't have a huge amount of perks, but I do have his home number and can call or IM him anytime about anything. If I need something, I just have to ask really. The bonus of gaming together for 6+ years I guess.

I feel the pain, although I guess I generally don't visit the Asylum during busy times, as I usually don't have too many problems. On occasion it does crawl, though. Unfortunately, I have no alternatives to offer. My own webhost would probably die under the strain of the Asylum.

It seems that there is an unusually heavy load being placed on the server the Asylum is hosted on between 1400Z and 2000Z on weekdays. I have noticed that I have a great deal of difficulty getting any page from the Asylum to display during those times. The load seems to let up on the week ends and at other times during the week.

I have been experienceing the same problem for about the last three weeks since the times of heavy load are right in the middle of the imes I normally visit the Asylum. I guess I'll be reading the Asylum later in the evening rather than mid-morning for a while.

I understand that the Doc and Tyberius Prime are working to try to get this problem resolved, but so that you can continue to read the Asylum until it is fixed, try reading at a different time than you usually do.

BTW: The times I gave above are Universal Time (UT or GMT) so convert them to your local time.

This may be my fault... I've been running some very power-intensive shock therapy experiments down in the basement. Then again, I always have accounted for about 90% of the Asylum's electric bill.

(In other news, I'm not seeing any real slow down at the moment, and it seems to have been relatively speedy over the past few days as well.)
