I returned home after a couple of days away to find my venus had captured her first fly. Well, I think she may have caught a few tiny fruitflys in the past but it's hard to tell as there's hardly anything remaining by the time the trap re-opens.
I don't think the Cranefly gave up without a struggle as it had two legs torn away in the fight, flippin'heck!

Thanks Ian
Alas, my Fuji S304 DC is no more. Methinks I may be a tad heavy handed because it just failed to work one day. Also I have no connection at home, so I'm only here occasionally when I can use a friends connection.

That's quite a catch for one of those. I hope you're making a time-lapse record of its digestion!

That's exactly what I was thinking Reiso, in fact Tao, if your camera doesn't work anymore, at least give us your observations please!

Next time I get online (I have just used up my one hour per person in the Library) I'll fill you in on all the juicy bits. I have another carnivorous plant that uses a tentacle with thousands of red sticky blobs to trap and digest its pray.
It's the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness here for my plants too as the warm summer has produced more than usual amounts of Craneflys for them to devour, so they seem content.
I'll try to borrow a camera so I can show you the carnage

I still owe y'all a detailed explanation of just how Venus has three little trip hairs inside the trap that have to be touched at least twice before the "mouth" closes. Even then, if there is no struggle and the triggers are not touched again the mouth will open again. This is to prevent our little Venus wasting energy trying to catch and digest any debris that may accidentally be blown in.

Here is my other carnivorous pet I think the full name is Honeydew but I call her honey Not too sure if you can tell from this but each leaf is covered it tiny hairs with a globule of sticky stuff at the tip. If the insect still struggles as this one did here the leaf actually folds over completly trapping the poor little fella, who is then slowly absorbed.

By the way I got a new camera last week a gorgeous Canon EOS 400D so I be spending most of my spare time getting used to the feel and the many functions. 'tis just a tad intimidating at the moment.

Looking at the small droplets in detail makes me want to get a nice SLR digital high end camera. I currently use a Fujifilm Finepix S5100 4MP Digital Camera. It has worked well with its 10x zoom, as a family and fun camera. I have now seen two comments on here about the Canon EOS 400D, so I will look into that one, unless somebody recommends another good one for pictures like this.
