Topic: Data Transfering (The Easy Way?)

Im sorry, I didnt know what forum this belonged in so I figured if not here then someone would move it.

Anyways, I have a problem on my hands and I figured someone here might be able to help me. I have an older desktop that is running WinME and needs some drivers loaded to be able to hook up to my cable modem. I am on a WinXP PC now and need to get the driver files from my laptop (the winXP pc), to my desktop (the WinME PC). Unfortuntly I do not have any disks at my disposal or a flash drive. How would I go about hooking these 2 PC's together?

My bud and I used to use a serial cable for these kinds of things. Came in handy once when we had to move a bunch of files due to encryption and a virus scanner wiping the entire HD on boot (I still laugh when I think about it). We've also been known to use old school modems, but he set it up and I could't tell you much about it.

Is pulling the drive out of the question? I do this on occassion between me and my woman's machine.

Get a cross-over network cable, plug it into each PC... give them both an IP address that puts them on the same network (say, 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, both with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). Share a drive on one, find it on the other. Done.

Things like this are the reason I still have my old network hub hanging around...

Of course if both machines have USB ports, it's easily worth the $20 for a flash drive - I don't know how I'd get by without one at this point

If you don't have a flash drive or even a single 3.5 inch floppy kicking around how likely is it that you have a serial cable or a cross-over cable? Unless you can beam IR, you won't be able to do this without a trip to the store or borrow what you need from a buddy.

The floppy is the cheapest way to go (I'm assuming the drivers needed for the cable modem are small files), but I agree with DL - flash drives are a great allround solution - a low capacity one might be found for under $20 a bin at best buy or circuit city etc.

Best case scenario, if you can swing it, is to download the drivers from your provider's site, copy them to a floppy or flash drive, and install.

The cost of a few cd-r's would be worth it. I am sure you can find some that are probably no more than $5-$10. Otherwise take Skaarjj's suggestion and use a crossover cable. You can probably get one for about $5.00

Can you tell it's been awhile since I've done any hardware and/or networking?

You can get IDe converters for laptop hard drives to regular IDE (very cheap), thats another option i guess.
