Topic: Rock Legends

I never pass up the opportunity to see Rock legends in concert if I can help it. So while not being a real fan, I trucked my ass down to see Deep Purple at the Bell Centre.

I normally find their music a little flat on CD or mp3, so did not think they would do much better live - thankfully I was wrong - this band is awesome - the hell with the studio, DP has to be experienced live.

I hope I have half the energy these guys have when I hit 60 - great musicians, damn good classic rock if you're into that.

I really wish I did not have titinitus - then I could have seen some of the really great bands in concert *sigh*

My ears ring too, constantly, but the "background volume" is not bad enough to keep me from concerts - only bad when in a very quiet room.

was Ian Gillan singing? He is one of the most under-rated rock singers IMHO. Great rock voice. I just can't stand Steve Morse. If Richie Blackmore was with them, I'd see them in a heart beat. I meet Steve Morse once and it was the worst experience of meeting a "rock star" that I've ever had. Total ass.

Yes IG is still the frontman / vocalist and he still rocks.

I don't know if Morse is an ahole in real life but he was brilliant in concert - sure I would prefer to have seen Ritchie but the music he plays is more than just classic, it's medieval.


The keyboardist, Don Airey was awesome as well.....and he did play William Tell's overture..that's damn classical!

I was talking about the concert at work and I was really shocked how many people had no idea who DP was...once you said, "uh...smoke on the water"....it was like "oh, yeah, them"....very very sad.

Ah, Deep Purple what a band. I heard them play in Liverpool about four years ago and they sounded great. I've watched them a few times the first being when I was a teenager back in the Cretaceous period I think it was.
Actually it may have been them or the Groundhogs, Black Sabbath, or Led Zep that may have been the underlying cause of my tinnitus.

I met Ian Gillian in Liverpool when I was working in a nightclub/restaurant about ten years ago. It was towards the end of the night in the wee early hours. We had had a particularly hectic club that night and as it was 2:00am I was rushing to get the bars stocked up again for the next day. One of my regular customers called me over to see if it was OK to stay in the quiet area and have another drink while the club emptied. I didn't really want to but decided to bend the rules a bit as she was a good friend. So I got the drinks served and the guy with her moved forward to pay and insisted I had a drink as well, which I did, (a large Jameson) just to be polite, I'm very polite when a Jammies is on offer. So I walked back from the business side of the bar and joined them. Shelly, my friend, then introduced us, she said this is my friend Ian and we shook hands. Shelly said, referring to my long hair, you might remember Ian from your hippy rock days, do you remember Deep Purple? I must have looked puzzled because she then added "he used to be the singer"!

Had this been a scene from a movie, in cinematographic terms, the camera would have slowly zoomed in on my face, agog, changing the depth of field as it went with images of memories from past Deep Purple concerts fading in and out to the sound of "Smoke on the Water" I was stunned into silence for a while and eventually managed to mutter something like we are not worthy .

Shelly took this opportunity to suggest "another round of drinks perhaps?" Perhaps! I leapt over the bar
got some more in and had a good old chat with them both for an hour or two.
Ian was a gentleman, well spoken, intelligent, and well........ROCKS

I'm still searching for a cure or at least something to alleviate my Tinnitus too. I'll keep y'all posted if I happen to find something that actually works.

Tao: thanks for sharing a great story. Ian G has a terrific connection with the audience, I can see why he's a great guy in person as well. Sorry to hear (no pun intended) about the damn ringing in your ears still not under control - I've thankfully made peace with mine.

C:\ How old were they? It didn't seem to matter. Some were early 30s, other mid-40s...did not make a difference. What is really sad is that DP can't fill the Montreal Bell Centre - I'm sure that trash bands like fall out boy can outsell them..is that a joke or what?

I actually loose hearing in my ears for a number of days, if they are subject to loud decibels, so I avoid Rock concerts these days.

The ringing in my ears for weeks afterwards (much louder than normal) being a painful reminder not to go to Rock concerts.

They rock hard. I saw them in Sweden in 1999, awesome show. I am just surprised that bands like these want to continue touring year after year. I think it would be hard to keep doing it for so long.
