The law can only be applied to data residing in the UK, hosted on UK servers, or stored on devices located within the UK. The law does not authorize the UK government to intercept encrypted materials in transit on the Internet via the UK and to attempt to have them decrypted under the auspices of the jail time penalty.

It may not authorize but since when has that been a hurdle?

I wonder how that affects Diplomats of other countries? They probably have Diplomatic Immunity, I suppose?

Boy... is sealand still up for auction?

Honestly, I'm at a loss where to emmigrate to.
All the western hemisphere is working very hard to build strong surveilance and police states,
most eastern countries that can afford it are doing the same, those that don't are usually
hardly a place for a gringo to live...

Guess a final friend is what these times need.

It's hard to know where to draw the line on these things. On one hand a law like this can literally save lives, but on the other hand the government can become abusive. It's a tough one.

that law is completly useless against anybody serious (see 'hidden volumes')
and will be used way more often in financial investigations
than in anything else (especially against terorrists).
