As I posted on my website:

quote:
Yeah, I did, seriously.

On my way back from a friend's house I hit a deer (going about 50mph). It wasn't that big and I ended up clipping it. It made enough damage to take out the right side headlight (the signal remains intact) and bent the hood. I think the whole front end may be bent a little from the impact. Damage:

I'm glad I hit the brake, otherwise the deer could have gone into my windshield, which would have been very bad compared to what did happen. (I don't know how realistic that possibility is by the size of the deer.) The deer didn't look that big, I didn't see any antlers. I didn't check on the deer since it was dark (about 12:15am) and I hit it off into heavy grass on the side of the road. I don't know if it was able to run off or not, I didn't hear any strange noises.

Man, what a night...

Just thought I'd share.

Ouch! You were lucky, indeed, IMHO. The thing about even a fairly smallish deer, of course, is that those spindly little legs snap/fold away on impact, and the full bulk of its body can quite happily roll across your bonnet and through your screen. At any decent speed, antlers or not, that's a great recipe for catastrophic crushing injuries, broken neck, or even decapitation.

I do wonder what happened to the poor deer. The damage to your vehicle isn't as bad as it could have been, so as long as the animal didn't seriously injure a limb, it may well survive. Despite my cynical nature, I kinda' find myself hoping...

I'm amazed that you didn't do more damage to your car. From the picture of the damage to your car, I would say that was a fawn, less that a year old. Even a small deer can do a lot of damage to your car. I've hit three deer over the last twenty years and even going less than 20mph, one of them crushed the entire side of the car.

After the third deer, our insurance company cancelled our policy and our oldest daughter called me "Bambi killer" for a while.

Back in the '70s I was driving through Washington state and a flock of ducks flew in front of my car. I hit one and it did about as much damage to the car as the deer did to yours.

When the deputy came out to take the report, he said that it probably survived and ran away.

Right now I'm glad it wasn't any worse.

Where I grew up deer were constantly running out in front of cars close to the house. I used to have those little siren things on my car to try to keep the deer away. Must have worked, I never hit one before. I've seen some nasty damage done to a car when hitting a deer though and you got off lucky.

I got hit in the rear Friday by a car. I think he was going *maybe* about 10 - 15mph and did a heck of a lot more damage to his car than that.

zavaboy: Yeah, you should definitely consider yourself fortunate. Hopefully it will be your last run in with deer.

People should live in cities, or in teepees, but not in-between.

hahaha I thought about that after I posted it and just left it. I did get married recently to a woman who loves to cook and cook well

Now that we know that zavaboy is alright and the car isn't *too* bad...let's hope the poor deer is getting along OK.

Indeed. But I've seen/heard of deer just getting up and walking away from some pretty bad wrecks (on the part of the car, that is). Considering the state of the car, I'm guessing that the deer probably isn't too bad a spot.

I've been in the car (not driving thankfully) for 3 different run-ins with deer. 1 was a large deer, mashed up the front end of the car really bad. The other was a fawn running down the middle of the freeway at night, no real damage to the car.... Then there was the deer that ran into the side of my friends car and dented in the door.

I've also been in a vehicle that hit a black bear. That wasn't so fun.
