Hm. BGSOUND is an ugly way to go about sound in js.
Embeds, quicktime, and the likes? No way.

Media tags? Like audio? I wish I could - if anyone can make that work,
give me a ring. I mean, a link.

Any other way to go about truely portable sound in javascript?

HTML5 specifies the Audio element. It's been inspired by an experimental implementation and draft specification from Opera 9.5. Luckilly the spec have evolved a LOT and we're waiting for it to stabilize before implemeting anything beyond the basic features we drafted.

And that's pretty much it for JavaScript. Anything else, is either not endoresed by a standard body or using proprietary technology like Flash.

If you go for Flash, I suggest you the excellent sound Manager by Scott Schiller.

Thanks.

But for a 20 liner entry, I am better off using my own "rip youtube" techniques methinks.
(this way, the lighter way, I mean : http://www.beyondwonderland.com/index.wip.html <-- writing down the satay code on the fly at the required time,
no Flash/js interaction - I'd consider it fair this way, because I would only use the really real markup + js - thoughts welcome,
but I *need* the ubber legendary tune for my entry).

http://developer.yahoo.com/mediaplayer/

Didn't seem to be working in Unixland (where media plugins are smart), but I think they had 'Linux support' on their todo list. Something to watch, maybe.
