Continuation of the negative direction in Texas:

I find this insanely frightening...and find even more frightening the fact that so few people seem even slightly interested or bothered...

Ah, just because he "has a hard time believing", it can't be.

And WTF does ID have to do with the Big-Bang?!

That is how seriously f**ked up these people are.

You are correct, DL - it is insanely frightening.

It seems, after generations of striving against enforced ignorance, we're all taking a step backwards from social and scientific enlightenment. It's the same the world over; we're being forced back into the dark ages by a fear of offending the religious zealot.

It's not just frightening - it's saddening.

The mention of Big Bang theory in relation to ID or evolution just shows Gonzalez up as a fool. Is there a stronger phrase than 'utter, raving f**k-wit'? How do these dangerously stupid individuals get to have a say in anything other than whether they want Frosties or Sugar Puffs for breakfast?

So do I, Gonzo, but that doesn't make the little fairy-folk inside my PC any more f***ing real, does it?

When people like Jade vote for them.

I bet this Gonzales is Catholic. Lately, if one looks at the demographics of religion and its changing nature in the US, one sees that there has been a big influx of Latin American Catholics helping stabilize the otherwise struggling Roman Catholic numbers Survey: US Religious Landscape In Flux

quote:
The Roman Catholic Church has lost more members than any faith tradition because of affiliation swapping, the survey found. While nearly one in three Americans were raised Catholic, fewer than one in four say they're Catholic today. That means roughly 10 percent of all Americans are ex-Catholics.

The share of the population that identifies as Catholic, however, has remained fairly stable in recent decades thanks to an influx of immigrant Catholics, mostly from Latin America. Nearly half of all Catholics under 30 are Hispanic, the survey found.

And we all know that the Catholic Church is extremely resistent to Scientific Fact and the Scientific Method.

Actually, WS, I'm surprised to hear you say that. What are you basing this on? I was under the impression that there are fairly large portions (large in relation to other organizations such as government, not in relation to the entire population of the church) that are devoted to scientific research.

Historically the Catholic Church has been extremely resistant to scientific discovery.
There have been many great leaps made in that regard, and the church has devoted a significant amount of resources to scientific research in the last several decades.

Catholics, as a group, however, do not seem to have kept up with that initiative, and the current pope has made a great number of statements that I would call contradictory to the outlook of the previous two popes. Especially in regard to evolutionary science.

Yes, as would I.

While it is true that the Catholic Church has made some improvements in how they view the Scientific Fact and the Scientific Method, they are still very resistant to it in many areas.

As is the constituency.

Sorry, but I find it laughable that anybody can claim that the Catholic Church has lowered its resistance to scientific progress. If there has been any change in its stance, it will be for no other purpose than to better address the curiosity of its followers in a manner that befits its prime directive; keep the people ignorant!

This prime directive has a purpose - instill fear of the Church and its representatives, and aid oppression of the masses. The CC has nothing to do with worshipping God, but with the unquestioning worship of His self-proclaimed representatives - proliferant child-rapists included.

The Catholic Church has prospered as a direct result of this directive, and continues to do so today. Anybody who claims otherwise is ignorant of CC history and current events.

You might as well claim that the Pope/CC was anti-Nazi.

Apparently you don't have to deal with too many southern baptists over across the pond

You all know I am not one to defend the catholic church by any means...but their efforts in various realms of science are fairly comprehensive for a strictly religious organization.

FWIW

And now more from Florida. My head hurts, and I want to cry. Or shoot someone. Haven't decided for sure

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/news_education_edblog/2008/03/will-we-be-hear.html

quote:

Short recap: By a 4-3 vote,The State Board of Education approved new science standards last month that were controversial because they require teaching evolution. As a compromise of sorts -- it didn't really appease opponents and angered the standards' backers -- the board inserted the phrase "scientific theory of" before the word evolution.

After the vote, John Stemberger, the head of the Florida Family Policy Council ,said social conservatives would push for an "academic freedom" measure when the Legislature convenes this month. Such a proposal would protect teachers who teach alternatives to evolution. House Speaker Marco Rubio -- who wanted evolution taught as a theory -- told the Florida Baptist Witness such a plan might gain traction in the house.
