Yeah, I read that thread title and thought, "Hey, wait a minute..."
I haven't had my camera out since before we moved... it's been almost two months now, I think.
(I just checked, and it's been two months less ten days--the longest I've gone without snapping a photo since I bought this camera over four years ago. )
...so here are a few piccies my girlfriend and I took while boating on the Norfolk Broads last (May Day) weekend. As they were taken at the start of Spring, they can't fail but be relevant... so there! :P
They're all 1024x768. The last two are of a duck that was nesting right in the middle of a small crafts/shopping 'village', surrounded by people and seemingly unfazed. I guessed that the little feathered one was hiding something and waited for it to shuffle around a bit to catch a glimpse of the eggs. It seems that the same duck has returned to the same odd nesting place for two years running. Even while I was watching, some kid wandered past, put out an incautious hand, and got a nasty nip for his trouble. I laughed, of course!
Oh yeah - I'd be happy to share a wallpaper-sized version of any of them to anyone who thinks them worthy of such - just let me know.
Thanks Ian, I still don't feel that confident with the colours and brightness/contrast while editing on this new monitor. The first photo of the Forget-me-not, I edited "flying by wire", using the settings I know I usually use for such an exposure. I still used my eyes of course, but I'm finding flat screen a big disappointment for editing photographs.
As the topic just now is Spring I thought I'd throw in this link to the BBC Springwatch series. We have it on the TV here in Blighty but the Springwatch website is fun to visit for nature lovers. The webcams have me setting one browser window permanently showing what's going on down in the Owl nest.
Sorry about the lack of thumbnailage Aquilegia Sun Dew Rather a tenuous link to Spring, just the fact the it's spring and it is there. Actually I rather think we are in Summer now, the calender is out of wack, not me
I think this is the best macro I have produced to date, so I'm going to make up any old association.

Just WOW ... great shot! ... I wish I could produce something like that. Btw which lens and other gear did you use? Anyway you get to choose the next topic
Here's the skinny on my gear.
Canon EOS 400D. Lenses, Canon EFS 18-55mm, Canon zoom EF 75-300mm.
I also used a macro lens attachment. I can't think of the correct name. They screw fit on the front of the lens like a filter, purporting to magnify 2, 5 or 10 times. They do make a slight magnification but not sure if they are worth the money.
I've had the Sundew or Drosera capensis on a sunny south facing window ledge for a couple of months now getting it acclimatised to going outside. The day I took the photo was very sunny so the lighting was great.
Instead of using a tripod I used a little bean bag on top of a book or two to get to the right height. I then turned off auto focus and manually focussed to the closest possible range. Then I moved the camera on the bean bag for support as close as I could to the subject while looking through the viewfinder till it came into sharp focus.
I then used a cable release to get the shot, I've found this to be best for this kind of photo
I was looking at your site the other day Arthurio and I think we have a similar camera set up. Thanks for passing the POW my way. You can find the next episode of POW here. POW 129 - Free Study
I forgot to mention another important aspect of the photo. I wrapped some dark material around a picture frame and placed used that as a background, really brings out the detail.
