Twitter? Is that for... twits?

Heh, just kidding.

I've heard some of the buzz about this, but I've never really been into any of the social networking stuff. I don't have a MySpace page, a Facebook account, etc. As such, the lure of such a system is lost on me. But I am curious--what about it is so addicting?

Twitter is a LOT lighter than the MySpace and other FaceBook.

Check this introduction of Twitter in plain English.

I was skeptical about the micro-blogging thing, but it's actually practical and not time consuming. You can subscribe to your RSS feed to avoid checking the site. And using a nickname URL ( right click on an INPUT field to create a "Search Engine" ), posting updates is as simple as typing "twitter doing foo" in your address bar.

I describe it kinda like IM meets a discussion board. You post things on your own time. Get responses sometimes almost immediately, and follow only who you want to. I tend to follow people in my industry and locals, and people I know. It keeps me in touch with them on a more regular basis. I wasn't using it too much either, but have found it very resourceful lately.

For a while I read Robert Scoble a LOT ... http://scobleizer.com/ he was on to twitter right away but I never quite 'got it'...anyway Scobles pretty good at keeping you up to date on what's new and great... at least in his opinion .. bla bla bla..... via his shared items....

Thanks, poi, that was actually a pretty nifty video.

I must admit, though, I am still skeptical. I know, I know, don't knock it until you try it, but still... I just can't shake the feeling that this is all about the inanity of everyday life. I mean, do I really need to know that my friend is making baked chicken for dinner? Maybe it's just my personality. Sometimes I need to get away from even my regular blog reading because I just need some time to myself, some time when someone else's life or thoughts are not intruding on my own. And I can't really picture myself sitting here and posting 140-character updates to a Twitter page.

Wow. I must sound like an extreme introvert. I guess I am, to some extent. Not so much that I would avoid internet forums (for example), but definitely enough so that Twitter scares me more than it interests me.

I have a Twitter account mainly to read the private Twitter streams of some of my friends and business associates and such... don't ask me why they're on it, but they're the only reason I am.

Me me me! I was very skeptical and now I too am addicted to Twitter.

It turns out micro-blogging is perfectly suited to my daily schedule. I've been lamenting for some time my absence from this place. But I just don't have the time for longer reads and longer posts as I once did. The 140 characters bursts are perfect for me right now.

Anyways, I hope to see some of you on twitter soon!

Preformed a quick Lazarus here as I was wondering if anyone's opinion of Twitter has changed or been confirmed.
I've just started a few days ago to see what it was like, I haven't decided if I'm a natural twitterer yet.

Suho hit the nail on the head as to why I don't frequent mySpace, et al. But I must sheepishly admit that I got a facebook account when I lost my cellphone in Cuba and had no other way of getting everyone's phone numbers. I'm still reluctant to actually put anything on it, though.

I dunno, I guess I'm from the 'old internet', where everyone had a 'handle' and real names were rare. "Don't give out your real name on the INTERNET!", they'd cry. I guess is stuck. I guess I liked it better when were we 'citizens of the internet', with none of the real-world drama, or viciousness, or racism, or xenophobia. To put it another way, on the internet, nobody knew you were a dog. Your circle of friends online (on ICQ and IRC, no less!) was totally different than in real life, they spanned the whole world, and had no criteria except the value of their intellect.

I guess it always was a fantasy world, anyway. The real world would never let that happen. Meh- leave me alone, I'm a little dramatic today.

I can't see myself "twittering" for any great length of time at this stage. Good link Petskull, the next one that popped up made me laugh too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlZcHwsa6CU
But we have to try out things right?
I'm just thinking that I don't lead the kind of life to twitter about. I can imagine that a lot of people will find it useful and fun, I just don't think I'm one of them.
I still like facebook though, I give it minimal info about me, and some of that is fabricated. I let very few applications "access my information" and generally only have friends view my data. I also berate these friends far asking me to join, hug a bunny, what drink am I, what celebrity does my dad look like, or rate my top ten whatever. These all demand access to your personal information before you can use them. No thanks.

Having said that if anyone here is interested I am Ged Hodge on facebook.

I completely see your point of view, I share it myself. I hoped for a new(er) way to relate. Interpersonal relationships without the judgemental aspect of physicality. Male/female, aesthetics of appearance, all the above.
Things sometimes evolve in ways we least suspect.

I feel a little behind in this thread, but I thought I'd post anyway...

I have been on MySpace, but it always seemed a little sketchy to me.

I use facebook regularly - guess it comes from working at a college and being around students, but it somehow seems more 'legit'... There's a lot of professional networking that goes on, education-wise, as well as the other social networking game crap. But I find it more than useful for keeping in touch with friends and family all over the world. Discovered a very good friend from my jr. high school years that I hadn't seen since and now she's in Thailand singing in resorts. Go figure. But it's possible I never would have connected with her again outside of facebook, since neither one of us is anywhere near where we grew up.

Another old friend talked me into Twitter, but I rarely remember to update it... you can follow me at bodhi_23 (someone else apparently has it without the underscore -you can follow them too if you want...)

There are all manner of privacy settings that you can use to restrict your data if you want. Even though they ask for real names, there are a significant number of folks who don't put their proper names in the blanks... Just use common sense about putting real live details (say, your address or phone number or any personally identifiable info) and your probably as safe online as you are in your house. If folks want your info bad enough, they'll get it in spite of facebook...

But you can find the real me on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bodhi23 and on Twitter: http://twitter.com/bodhi_23 You guys are cool - I trust ya.

Yeah I got started on this twittery business when a friend of mine that I was working on a project with sucked me into it. I was really skeptical at first, but it keeps my day going when it's slow, and I even get to follow Weird Al, and Mike J. Nelson of MST3K fame.

My screenname is:

twitter: leeand00

But yeah I can understand the lament of the old Internet vs. the new, I really thought the content on the old Internet was alot more intellectual, it was a place you could escape the likes of the media, and read about what's really going on, but ah now I'm afraid it's been invaded.

I have, since being bugged to death by some people, set up a Facebook account. I don't post much to it as I still don't do anything that interesting. However, I have gotten back in touch with a lot of people that I haven't spoken with in a very long time. Kind of refreshing I guess.
