I was just wondering if there have been some changes about font usage during the past years.
Which fonts apart from Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, Georgia can one use? Are there still not more than 4-5 fonts which most of the computers have installed? What about Calibri, for instance?

For sans-serifs, I'm in favour of Tahoma and Trebuchet myself, they are far better than Helvetica or clones such as Arial or the similar but considerably wider Verdana. For serifs, Georgia beats everything.

For monospace, I like Consolas, but that's a Vista addition (can be downloaded for earlier Windows versions though). I usually just use the monospaced generic family and let users choose which one they prefer using the browser settings.

Helvetica on macs, or the helv clone on unix I think. It was *the* most used font in advertising 1950-2000 (to the point that if you add together ALL other fonts, Helvetica would still be still the most used *in advertising*). I guess it's being replaced by other fonts in this windows-centric age (the Arial font is the Windows side clone, but it isn't a direct clone and isn't considered even close to as nice by most advertising firms), but it's quite an important font historically.

This font survey is based more on reality IMO:
http://www.visibone.com/font/FontResults.html

codestyle.org ones have some non-default fonts you'd have to purchase and install (etc.) to get that are way too close to the tops of the lists.

That 'Helvetica' documentary from last year is pretty interesting.
