And there's more

Not a really universal solution but could we try temporarily banning $ £ ? ¥ from posts just to see if they'll react to that or not. This must be something that no one else has tried which should mean that automated bots can't handle it.

I rather suspect that it will not help...

I think there is more here happening than meets the eye.

Call it a hunch.

so... the next step would be to install an old mandarine curse before on the registration page affecting all those who enter to spam...
who can provide this? Suho, is your mandarin up to it?

Ooh, I don't know... I'm not too bad for reading, but for providing old Mandarin curses? That would probably be beyond my ability, alas.

Guess it's time to crack the books.

Let me see..."May you live in interesting times" is an old Chinese curse.

Can you translate that back into the original Mandarin, Master Suho?

I wonder how someone goes about getting a job like that?

Are they like sitting in Spam Centers, in small cubicles, mashing the keyboard keys as they frantically copy and paste from forum to forum?

You should have a question on the member sign-up form that requires the user to run a search for a related term (the answer could be a prominent word in a thread related to the topic of the question).

I reckon that most people well qualified to work in a 'spam centre' would have greater difficulty operating a search and answering the question than the average genuine Asylumite. Any genuine prospective members who are unable to answer the question would have to be accepted as casualties of the 21st century condition... and who wants a member who can't use the search function, anyway?

We have a search function

If we didn't, the suggestion above would be redundant.

User sign-up requirement (to begin posting); a random question that can be answered by navigating to (and using) the search function on Ozone Asylum. Perhaps the answers could be planted somewhere in the forums/archives - it would be simple for anybody wishing to join, but might discourage hit-and-runners...

Nah, it's a stupid idea. Sorry.

Best way is still to approve sign-ups manually.

1) As an additional measure add a box to the sign-up page that says: "write a sentence here, if you don't your sign-up won't be approved".
2) Admin get's e-mail that includes the "random text field" and gets to decide whether to approve this person or not. If he/she still has some doubts then he/she can write the person and ask "hi, we've been having trouble with some spam bots, could you please write me back if you're not one. thanks".

that's what gmail is for ... no spam ... well there is the occasional 1 spam e-mail that seeps through once every two weeks ... but I never have to worry about obfuscating my address on public websites

maybe we could channel the asylum posts through a gmail spam filter ...
