Topic: PHP 5 development environment? (Windows) (Page 1 of 1)

I used to use phpdev to test my stuff before I uploaded it, but my host recently upgraded from PHP 4 to PHP 5, and from what I can tell phpdev is no longer in active development and doesn't have a stable version for PHP 5. Does anyone know of a similar package for Windows that will work with PHP 5? Or am I going to have go through and do all of this manually?

I'd like to avoid the latter if possible, seeing as how I don't have too much free time these days.

[Edit: I should probably also add that the upgrade has caused my site to break, and although I think I have a basic idea of what the problem is, it's been a long time since I've done any real coding with PHP, and it's probably going to take me a while to work it out. So I don't really want to be messing around with the code with a live site. As it is, my front page is still visible, and I'd like to keep it that way and do a smooth transition to properly working code, rather than have the whole mess online. So... anything that will get me up and running quickly is a bonus.]

I heard good things about WAMP
There was another one that I used once that was OK but I didn't like it as much as PHPDev. I'll look for it and post when I find it.

Might be time to get a spare headless box and throw Ubuntu or something on it. It is so easy to set up LAMP it is really a great way to go.

i would go with installing apache and mysql and as a editor i use netbeans.
eclipse is also broadly used, but i find it a bit overweight.

if you dont want to install all the servers manually you could use xampp which provides php sql phpmyadmin ect. out of the box.

hope this is more ore less what you where looking for

CPrompt: Unfortunately, I really do not have the time to go messing around with another box these days. I know it sounds like a lame excuse, but I just don't. I need something that works out of the box, more or less.

So I'll give both WAMP and xampp a look. Thanks for the tips!

you said it, not me Nah, I'm just kidding. I know what you mean about no time. I have about 5 minutes in the morning to check my RSS feeds and then head off to work (like now). When you do get some time though, you should really give it a shot. It makes things so much easier IMHO that is.

EasyPHP was also pretty nice the last time used it

I was hoping to find a thread with xampp mentioned. I want to learn php from online tutorials. I'm just al ittle concerned about screwing up my computer. The xampp site makes it seem so simple. Is it really that simple?

Is is risky to install or am I worried about nothing?
