OK, this may be an odd question, but is Mpbs a valid abbreviation for MB per second? I ask because I'm translating an article that features the abbreviation "Mpbs" and a googling turns up pages at both PC Mag and ZDNet that say "See: MB/sec." I'm not sure if this means that it's a common typo or that it is a valid alternative. I can't imagine that it would be valid, because that doesn't seem to make any sense (Mega per byte seconds?), but I've been wrong before.

Here are the links, by the way:

I would guess that the answer depends upon the context of the sentence in which the abbreviation appears.

MBps or MB/s would mean megabytes per second, whereas Mbps or Mb/s would be megabits per second. If Mpbs is a typo, it would be referring to Mb per second (bits not bytes), standard bandwidth measurement.

I think both those references are simply guessing the closest search term match. In any case, the suggested search is a misnomer as the lowercase 'b' would denote bits, not bytes. The suggested search should have been Mb/s, but I'm not sure it's relevant.

Yup, I think the only clue is the sentence in which you found Mpbs. What language? What's the topic of the article? It could well be a casual abbreviation of something completely unrelated to network bandwidth... :/

Thanks, guys. This confirms what I was originally thinking.

The article (originally in Korean, by the way) deals with mobile devices, and is referring to data transmission speed, so I'm pretty sure it should be Mbps. Actually, I'm going to have to do a little more research and see whether the figure mentioned for this particular device is more feasible as MB or Mb. Just going on what you guys have said, I'm thinking it might be megabits rather than megabytes.

Yeah, some words can be translated into different meanings under different context background.
