You're abusing XHTML 1.1.

Why? Because you're ignorant, no doubt.

You mean how? One should not send XHTML 1.1 as text/html as you are. It's all in the doc.

Ignorant is I am I cannot understand how i abuse XHTML. Maybe you the oh so clever reisio could explain to little me what terrible mistake I have made? My guess is that I should change responseText to responseXML?

Anyway. What do you think about my page beside that?.

I've tried fixing it.. But I can't get it to work. ResponseXML is returning null and I can't understand why..

Interesting article you posted there reisio, thanks, I've never quite understood the whole story with XHTML/HTML and what was best for what reason, now I think I have a good idea.

der redsplat, you've a nice looking site, although I think using AJAX is a bit of over-engineering, I assume you're using it to learn it.

Can you narrow down what might be causing your problem, perhaps we can help you in the DHTML/Javascript section of the forum.

The problem is that ResponseXML returns null although the document loadeds.

I'm glad you like my design. I wasn't really sure about how good it was. And you are right that using AJAX on such a small page is a bit weird. But it was very fun to make

The method getElementById is meaninless in XML since XML is completely generic and there is no restriction to the attribute id

But why does ResponseXML return null?

the responseXML would be null if the document received by the XHR isn't a valid XML document.

So if I'm using responseXML the recieved data should be XML? Not XHTML?

As it says on the tin, reponseXML is for XML. Valid XHTML is valid XML. The question is: is the thing you request valid X(HT)ML ? If it's not then kaboom the responseXML will be null or an empty document.

Oh and using innerHTML the way you do ( element.innerHTML=xmlhttp.responseText; ) is bad. Very, very bad. It is subject to script, style, iframe injections... if you don't have a strict sanity check of the content sent by the server, esp. since you also have a comment section where anyone can come and post something.

I noticed the line setInterval(fadeOut,'20');. The second argument of setInterval is a number, not a string. Ok, the type coercion of JavaScript saves you here, but meh

In your fadeIn and fadeOut methods, you should set the actual opacity after clipping it to the range [ 0 ; 1 ], not before.

Thanks for pointing that out poi. I didn't knew that valid XHTML is valid XML too. Anyway the returned data doesn't seem to be valid XML and I can't understand why. This XML stuff is really frustrating...

I've fixed the other bugs you mentioned.

Personally, i do like your site very much.
It looks not professional enough. The page size is too small and can not spread the whole browser.
I do not know if it is due to my browser. I'm using Firefox.
