Hear hear. In a society that ensures the necessity of a rich/poor divide that spawns entire swathes of people (hard-working and otherwise) who are unable to afford simple health care, I would suggest that a basic national health care system would be a sensible step, if only to ensure that there are fit and healthy workers there to keep the lucky minority in the manner to which they are accustomed. To be perfectly honest, the fact that a rich, fat, greedy country like America has no provision for the healthcare of its more disadvantaged citizens just sounds backward. There are third-world countries with more sensible policies... but then, they probably wouldn't still be third-world if it wasn't necessary to keep them that way for the benefit of the rich, greedy, and fat. To say "health care for those that can afford it" is just backward. To ignore the plight of so many in YOUR OWN COUNTRY who are unable to get the most basic health care even though they work (you're just being stupid if you think every worker has health insurance)... that's just sick. My country is no better though. Sure, the UK has a 'free' health service, but while my government lines the pockets of oppressors (or generally, the already-rich) in poorer countries, it ignores the elderly freezing to death in their own homes for lack of the cost of heating, it ignores the children living and begging on the streets of its own capital, and it dismisses the ongoing absurdity of bureaucracy that denies life-saving drugs to patients who happen to be in the wrong postcode... Maybe I'm just ranting, but the truth is, without the work and support of those classes you deem unworthy of basic human rights, you'd be worthless. Your comfort, your wealth, your health - it all relies on the many layers of your society, right down to the great masses that can't afford simple health care. A health service that is accessible to all is not charity - it's an investment in the very machine that makes your country work, and keeps you in large-screen tellies and potato chips.
