Hi,

I'm surprised no one posted about the JS1K contest. The organizer provided an HTML boilerplate with a canvas tag and a script tag where competitors have up to 1024 bytes to do anything they want. No libraries allowed. No external resources allowed. You have the boilerplate and your 1024 bytes of JavaScript. That's it! The deadline is today, September 10th at 23:59 CET.

There's been some really nice entries. Some graphic. Some less. Some even feature some sound. But only the last submitted entry of each competitor count.

My first one was a Quaternion Julia Raymarcher ( basically an animated 3D Julia Fractal ).
People started to submit tweet-sized entries so I threw in an Embossed Mandelbrot Fractal.
And here is my second and last serious entry. This one made me sweat. In comparison cramming 3D Tomb II felt like a walk in the park.

WOLF1K

Thought the inmates would appreciate such oddity.

I enjoyed your entries, p01, both of them were well-done. The amount of compression necessary on Wolf1k in particular is impressive, and even borders on the disturbing.

Most of the entries in the contest aren't very good, but one of the ones that impressed me in particular was TinyChess (http://js1k.com/demo/750), which plays a reasonable game of chess in 1K, GUI and all. The fact that the *rules* of the game fit into 1K already astounds me, but squeezing an alpha-beta search in there too is awesome.

I was going to enter myself, but I've yet to be able to come up with an interesting program to write--none of my ideas were anything new or different. (This isn't a problem particular to the contest, I've been in a programming rut since January.)

I thought there were a load of really, really good entries. There are a lot of talented coders out there!

I was happy enough just to get my "Boing" demo down to under 1Kb (just made it, see top entry here: http://www.codecouch.com/dan/ ), but I doubt I'll even get in the top 20 with some of the other amazing entries that made it in.

Good luck, poi... You have a very good chance with Wolf1K!

Dan

Wow, seriously impressive poi. Congratulations on the fourth place spot.

I wish I'd come across this earlier; I've been out of this fun for a while and, having just finished my MSc, I've been looking for interesting projects to work on (I actually took a shot at a GB emulator for a bit of fun - so far it currently runs a few demos: http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/503/emulator.png )

Cool stuff, but I thought the judges skipped too many really good scripts and included some that seemed less worthy. Animated lasers? WTF? I never even looked at that script. Was there something really cool going on there?

I was like a crack addict every night checking the new scripts and picking them apart.

I could only get so far with Wolf1k. The magic was too great
Hubbard-What? That thing is awesome--whatever the hell it is

Seriously, there were too many for just a top 10
I think we should honor the best entries by listing our favorites.
Here are my faves ( in no special order )

The objects in 3d with reflections--That script is fricken awesome.

The chess board in 3d with mouse dragging pieces and drag rotation-- I thought that was awesome.

Roman Cortez's submission was awesome

Dan's Atari beachball stuff was amazing.

The battlezone simulation was awesome.

the 3d pong game by heyscore was really cool.

The grappling game where you play spiderman was cool and fun to play

the same blocks game was fun to play. The same person made a car game that was really impressive. Even had tail lights on the car and rendered with polygons. I thought that was one of the best. I was amazed that it didn't make top ten

The color change block games in all the versions were addictive. I play them still.

The script that takes text and creates particles which are then rotated in 3d-- AWESOME

I really liked the raindrops with umbrella that follows the mouse. Too fricken cool.

Again, how is that one not in the top 10, but some lines (lasers?) and (offensive title) text is up there?

I'm gonna miss the js1k daily update. It was fun to see such cool stuff each day

Thank goodness for jsdo.it to give me a daily fix .
