Some background;

I build things with Lego. Some of it can be seen here. I eventually hope to get hired by them.

A week or two ago, someone from Lego contacted me. They like what I've been doing, and I've been invited to send some of my models to some kind of exhibition by them. (Can't coem in person, it seems.) In their HQ. Marketing people will see them. Managers will see them. Designers will see them.

So, together with my models I intend to send a stack of business cards. And I'm having trouble with the design. Can anyone here give some pointers?

These are all intended to be 85x55 mm. I'm pretty sure the picture of the bridge thing won't come out right at that scale, but I -do- want some recogniseable model on there...

I personally find the third one pretty nice! Perhaps only the logo on a white background (no yellow at all). It is crisp, clean, and does what it is supposed to.

I personally would avoid the gradient in the yellow. Either go with one solid yellow, or leave it out.

Putting a pic of one of your lego masterpieces is going to be difficult, I think. Most likely expensive. I wonder if it is possible to get a hologram type of pic? One that can change between two graphics, perhaps? Then you can show one of your masterpieces in motion!

I hope you get the job!

I'd drop "Designer" and just go with Pixels and Bricks - and I'd try to figure out how to use the QR Codes.

Just my runaway brain but it seems to me the QR's depict quite nicely both Pixels and Bricks ....and I can quite easily see the people at Head office bringing out the camera phones.... because you know they all have them... The QR Code has your URL and whatever else want to include...everybody has your business card testing it.... Nice touch in what's left of my brain.

But for sure drop Designer. =) -_Q

Why not leave the front as is, and put a picture on the back of the card..full size.

I would say the biggest thing they all suffer from is a lack of focus.

What I would recommend, for starters:

1) Typeface. Get something a little more interesting. Doesn't have to be something with a lot of flair or anything, but something with a little more style...
2) Visual Hierarchy. To many things at the same basic level of visual importance. Get that name much bolder. Get the title smaller. Think colors or shades...don't have everything the same level of black.
3) Composition. Everything is just kind of dropped on the page. Move it around. Use placement on the page for emphasis. Don't be afraid of the edges. Don't be afraid to have images off the edge...
4) Color. The middle one right now looks the best, but it still needs punch. bolder deeper colors perhaps. subtle gradients work well.
5) and yeah, as the others have said...a business card has two sides. wouldn't want to waste one. QR codes are a good thing...
6) oh, and be careful about whatever kind of copyright/trademark issues there might be with using an image of legos on your business card. I am not sure where it falls, but they may take exception....worth looking into

FWIW.

*love* what you've done with legos....

I ran with the QR codes, I hope they're effective.

Well, to all who were wondering, here's what he had to say about it:

We had a really successful fair last Thursday and Friday. A lot of people were through the exhibition and there was great interest around your models. I saw your pile of name cards getting lower so they are around. If it will trigger any contacts to you I cannot know?let?s see.

Thanks a lot for your participation!

So yeah.
